Thanks for the thorough review! One thing not mentioned: Does Ken Koyama have personal experience with menstruation? Obviously, “Ken” is a masculine name, but between manga-ka’s preference for pen names, and gender not necessarily corresponding to one’s physical body, the author name alone doesn’t tell me anything about his or her personal experience. If Koyama has not had a period, I wonder why they chose the subject to explore— maybe to help characterize friends experiences? Or as an authorial challenge?

I think Koyama is a man (source), but since I wasn't sure if they might not still menstruate, I stuck with a they/them pronoun in the review. Uterus or not, it's a well-done book and very keen on getting rid of period shaming/silencing.
