Lupin III put on a Superman costume in a Red Jacket episode, so this builds on that.

That was a really cool collaboration, I can't believe that Monkey Punch was still working up until his passing. Also, I think I heard that the original Lupin III manga was a bit more cartoony than the anime, and that Monkey Punch was inspired by American Comics, especially those from Mad Magazine.
