I think she probably has a better shot than most J-pop stars to succeed in the US because of her ability to write English lyrics that actually make sense, and then sing them properly. |

Utada could too, but her ablum didn't make it big in the US. Anyway, it said Rie Fu is going to release an album in London, right? I was hoping US. I loooove her voice and her music, I was hoping to get a CD that didn't cost $35. |

Halcali is amazing. I love those two and their goofy dances. However, the newer stuff on Cyborg Oretachi is a little too plain and typical j-pop. Their two first albums are way more original and are an interesting mix of hip hop, j-pop, even some techno, and everything else. Check them out on Youtube, they have the best videos ever. I would love to seem them live (and dance along with them

Rie Fu is pretty cool too, although I haven't heard a lot of her songs. (they should have called the album "Rie Who?" like her first EP) [/code] |

That would be because Utada was marketed in the wrongest way possible. I blame corporate. For Rie Fu to be more successful than Hikki's US release would not be too difficult to accomplish. All she has to do is keep doing what she does and not suddenly step out into some completely wack-ass genre with a number of questionable lyrical and musical decisions. However, for her to reach an audience beyond the J-culture nerds who already know who she is ... I don't see that happening. I love her songwriting, and her English abilities are a big plus, but let's be honest, skill and talent have NOTHING to do with a musical artist's success or popularity. |

I love her so much. Her music really has an impact on me. I hope she can come perform in the States sometime. And I hope this CD comes stateside too! |

I like Rie Fu a lot but from the type of reactions I get to her stuff from others (generally ranging from "meh" to "why?"), I have wonder how well she'll do.

Totally agree with you. What Utada did wrong was to step away from what she does best in Japan and jump into a weird genre when she was trying to break into a new market. I always thought she could have done a tie-in campagne with an anime program on US TV. Do not show he face on the album cover, use an anime image of her instead. That will at least attract anime fans and alikes. A japanese singer trying to break into the uS market, or anyone from any cultural background, they really need an individuality that make them stand out from the crowd. Utada is a Japanese, and she should have used that as a selling point, because that is what she is different from all the other millions of Rn'B singers in US. As for Rie Fu, luuuuuuuuuv her voice. Let's just hope she will stick to what she does best in Japan, then she'll be ok. She won't be your next Britney or Beyonce, but at least she wont do as bad as Utada. With proper marketing, she can at least have a hit single with popular TV shows and such. Now, the next Japanese artist I wish to have an international release is definitely LOVE PSYCHEDELICO. They rock! and they sing in English too~ |

That's a gross exaggeration. Most of the music people actually LISTEN to is done by people with skill and talent (Not the idols, which are the NAMES everyone knows; Brittney Spears, to take the extreme example, is more known for her scandals than her music these days... Heck, I don't think I've heard her more than five times in the last few years.) Mass-marketing strategies are important, but no one listens to your music if it isn't good in some way. The problem is, there's so much good music already out there, it can be hard for another good person to make an imprint... thus marketing. Frankly (and refrencing earlier discussion), Utada Hikaru could have become big here if that was carried out properly... her 'sound' is smooth enough to the American Ear that there's no reason it couldn't happen. But first you'd have to let people to listen, and, frankly, while her music is wonderful, it's not so profound that a person will become a fan after listening once. Rie Fu would face that problem, compunded by the fact that her 'sound' is a bit less mainstream, meaning the marketer would have to search out and pin down the correct group, which is a tad more interesting to do. For the record and on a completely different note, I like Halcali much more than I like Rie Fu, but this board seems to be more centered on the latter. Is that just because everyone's seen Bleach but has no clue who Halcali is? Oh, well. |

Anyone know where in Maryland Rie Fu used to live? I live there (here?) , and I'm curious.
 If it's close to Annapolis, our "Hysterical" society will have a nice little fit, something to add to their collection.

Always exciting to hear about Japanese artists breaking out in the US and Europe. Rie Fu new album "Tobira Album" was really good, so I hope her CD gets a release in the US, too.
