I'm glad it sounds that its doing better than initially expected. However, $500mil to break even on a $170-200mil film? I'm finding that hard to believe. I could see the $350-400mil, because its not unheard of that advertising and marketing will double the cost of the film. But $500mil? If this is true then were they expecting it to earn a billion, because that would seem overly optimistic. Especially after the delays in its release. Its not like an established franchise like Star Wars where you can count on a fanbase to come out in droves.

I think part of the reason Alita may need to hit higher numbers to break even is that studios don't get all the box office revenues (and in China specifically, they get a smaller cut than they do in the US). As for expected returns, well...some folks may have been banking on the James Cameron connection.

I'm glad it seems to be doing better as well!

As for the budget, the rule of thumb that the marketing budget equals the production budget is about the only thing I've heard from credible sources. That seems to jive with the statement given by Fox. The higher figures could very well be exaggeration on the part of the "sources".

Looks like Asia will more than likely carry this title to the top. Fans guessed right on China's embrace of the film. But what does Japan say, what does S. Korea say?

It is doing great on South Korea, already had revenues of ca. 20 million there. In Brazil the movie is doing pretty badly though, I came out the same day as in the US and its box office revenues are much lower even correcting for the smaller size of the market. Considering the 65 million that Alita made in the Chinese market over the first weekend means that it could get up to 200-250 million dollars there, so China is mainly responsible for the future of Alita franchise.

Talking about profitability: Usually the studio gets about 50% of gross revenues, the rest stays with the movie theaters. Alita cost 170 million to produce and 100 million in publicity, so it needs to earn revenues of about 540 million to break even. Since it will also generate revenues with merchandise, streaming and disk sales, to be considered a break even requires revenues around 450 million dollars.

I think that to get a sequel Alita does not necessarily need to make a profit since these days movies survive as franchises so the first movie of a movie series just needs to start building up the fanbase for future titles. Pacific Rim got a sequel even though its revenues were not enough to break even.

According to this article Alita is currently the #2 anime related movie in Japan. According to https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Alita-Battle-Angel-(2019)/South-Korea#tab=summary it's pulled $16 million USD in South Korea.

Really, this stuff isn't hard to find out.

Excellent. Wonder why Korea pulled so low? Surely they're familiar with the property.

I think the idea of creative/Hollywood accounting comes to play for the break even.
