{Edit}: We're more loose with the "post actual sentences" rule in Talkback section, but literally just typing 3 dots is not enough. Next time please at least post 1 full sentence with some actual words. Thank you. ~ Psycho 101

That premise makes me rather uncomfortable. None of that seems consensual. I just don't know.
I guess the whole rose bride thing in Utena wasn't the shining beacon of consent either, but ...

AH. So the "sara (plate)" in "Sarazanmai" refers to the plates on the kappas' heads, and we have three of them ("san-mai"). Got it.

I guess Reo and Mabu would be the zombies, then? They're looking a bit less... warm-blooded, than their original art.

To be fair, for the rose bride that was pretty much the point. It might be the point here as well.

That said, I also find the premise pretty obnoxious, simply because based on what we have so far it seems to be trying a bit too hard to be quirky and outrageous. I guess many people will find it attractive and funny, but me, I just find it kind of tiring. Just... just make a good show, Ikuhara? One that is not relying too hard on overblown eccentricities that seems to have morphed into mannerisms. Utena was great, Penguindrum was good, but YuriKuma was like a mediocre Ikuhara parody, and this one... oh well, we'll see what it's like when the show is out.

It's almost as if the lack of consent is a point inherent to these stories and their message about abusive systems, rather than just a random element added in there for fun

I mean there's a lot of unnecessary scenes in some Ikuhara works that I understand not being comfortable with but, like, you can't tell Utena - a story about abuse and power dynamics - without the abuse and power dynamics. Who knows what Sarazanmai is about yet but I doubt its plot points are arbitrary

Yeah, that kinda was my point.
But in Utena, the horror of the situation unwraps itself slowly, until you get the actual implications only at the end.
This seems a bit too much on the nose, you know? I just don't know what to make of it yet, which was not a feeling I had before watching his other shows. (That part usually comes later.)

so....
kazuki, the protagonist used to have a bright personality and all but now is all about "that" and isn't as bright as before.....so what is "that"? about finding connections? love?

then we have keppi telling the boys they need to connect in "that way" (no idea what this could be about) and that they need to find the zombies and bring him their shirikodama or they'll never return to their former selves.

Now, i think the zombies could be Reo and Mabu.
If the theory about Sara (reo and mabu's daughter) being somewhat evil, then i can totally see why they would be the "zombies".
In the spin off manga, Sara is said to have a magical power. This "power" allows her to have pretty much anybody fall in love with her.
In the PV we see Sara on the billboard all grown up, which means we can assume at least 10 years have passed since Reo and Mabu found her. In the Billboard we can see her promoting some some of propaganda where she tell people that they need to follow A, that she owes herself to A, and to believe in A.
If Reo and Mabu have been raising her ever since they found her, and she's been "brainwashing" them ever since, can we assume they're the "zombies".
In the poster we can see Sara on the left and she seems to have a kappa-like head.
Could she be something like a human hybrid sent by the kappa kingdom to earth to start shit?

What part of the premise is making you uncomfortable? The line ANN added to the summary about the traditional location of the shirikodama? Because without that addition, it’s a pretty typical “turned into an animal against one’s will” premise. Might be better as a footnote instead of an aside in the summary itself, since we don’t know how far the series is going when it comes to the shirikodama from the introduction.

From what I've come to expect of Ikuhara, this batshit weirdness is... well, weird freaking weird, but outlandish outer trappings used to tell a compelling story is also what I've come to expect from Ikuhara. So I'll keep an eye out for this one when it drops.

Good to see the Ikuhara discourse has already started. (Also yes there will be sexual assault/rape somewhere. Its an ikuhara show)

Unfortunately, a lot of details in folktales and stories about kappa tend to be pretty non-consensual...there are a lot of stories about kappa looking up women's kimonos or outright molesting them, and that whole thing about stealing people's shirikodama is in line with folklore about kappa as well. We'll just have to see how this anime handles that, I guess.

I feel like Westerners who know nothing about Japanese folklore should not be speaking out about the shirikodama thing. Of course stealing someone's soul through their butt is non-consensual! Kappa are demons, regardless of how cute they look!

Knowing Ikuhara he's gonna use it to make a point, but sure, let's sit here and debate the caveats of Japanese mythology.
