That was the right decision. Viz don't need that news story hanging over their head

I disagree, they should have published it.

I'm curious what people's opinions are on this:

Before this whole nasty business came to light I bought and read the first three volumes of the original manga with plans to buy the whole thing eventually. I'd also bought the complete TV series before all this and it's been sitting on my to watch list for a while now.

After all this came out I put all my Kenshin stuff to the side and decided I'd deal with it later.

Do you guys think it's appropriate to start reading/watching it again?

You already bought it so might as well, it's a good story

Do it bother you that much reading something written by him? If no, then buy it. If yes, then don't. Easy.

PS:If you enjoy his shit regardless of what he did or didn't do, just keep reading. Nobody's going to find you hour and shank you. Wink

This is typically how I feel about it honestly. I remember that Jerry Seinfeld went on Colbert once and said he still listened to Bill Cosby's comedy and that he was able to separate the work from the person.

The whole thing that bugs me about this really is how he just got a slap on the wrist over it. Like he was fined just under $2000 over it. I just bought a used car for $2000. I feel that being caught with child porn should be the more expensive of the two.

It really comes down to whether or not you are personally able read or watch it without being constantly reminded of the creators. For example, I can't watch the Yamada's First Time dub anymore, because every time a 15-year old character talks about wanting to sleep with Takashi, it reminds me that Takashi is voiced by a guy who is currently in prison for child porn.

How much you're willing to look beyond the creator's "real life" is very much a case-by-case thing, though. Take Ethan van Scriver and Frank Miller, two American comic artists whose political views I couldn't disagree with more strongly. I recently chose to get rid of all my Ethan van Scriver-drawn Green Lantern graphic novels because of how obnoxious I find his attempts to market himself in terms of his politics, but I've never even thought about getting rid of my Frank Miller Batman comics.

^ It's a tough convo to have. The simple version is that production and possession are two entirely different things. With "just" possession, the punishment is generally pretty light. I expected some time in prison, though, and not just a fine...especially when I know that's chump change to him.

The main topic is also a tough one. We stopped airing The Cosby show basically everywhere, but other shows related to "#MeToo" are still up and running, but with accused actors removed. Personally I think that if the person in question is not the main character themselves (Such as bill Cosby or Roseanne), then it should be easy to separate the work from the criminal. So I think they should've kept publishing this. Yes, his name is on it, but it's really easy to ignore that and just enjoy the story. It's not like you have to see his face as you read the manga. It's a good manga, regardless of his issues.

Good. Publishing it would be associating with a pedophile. We’ll see if it lasts though.

What confuses me about this is that they are continuing to publish the 3 in 1 edition of the normal Rurouni Kenshin manga despite the charges and conviction. I mean, I can understand why you wouldn't want to publish a work by someone who is involved with child pornography, as that would hurt your reputation as a company, but why would you just stop electronically publishing his ongoing work instead of canceling all his projects altogether. Just seems weird to me.

That's less harsh than what I did. I THREW OUT my dvds and never got involved with the series again. I don't want to support it.

Doesn't Viz censor manga anyway? I remember they changed stuff in Shaman King and other stuff back when their magazine was an actual magazine and not digital only. Either way, no big loss. Scanlations exist, and if licensing companies really want to play this game, it's not going to hurt anyone but themselves since fans can easily find other means.

Not sure how big of a seller Kenshin was for them, but I wonder if they'd do the same thing if it was Dragonball or One Piece's author under scrutiny. Maybe not, since they're all Shueisha properties and they're only dropping Kenshin, not Shueisha as a company. Guess they aren't that morally against supporting Shueisha who is standing by Watsuki. I mean, they'd go out of business if they did that.. but this lets them do a token gesture and they'll pray nobody pushes the issue further like people usually do.

Viz doesn't censore things anymore unless it is actually aimed at children like Pokemon Adventures, the last thing they censored was Mr. Popo's lips in Dragon Ball Full Color, that's fair IMO.

The money. Viz can make a empty public gesture about caring about the author’s transgressions but clearly people are still buying the older manga. They might as well just publish the new stuff online if they are going to continue to produce his older work.
