if I recall right wasn't the whole point of this to be nothing more than an advertisement campaign to pull in tourists?

While "Urusei Yatsura" and "Ranma 1/2" were among the earliest harem/proto-harem arnime, "Tenchi Muyo" is what I think really standardized many of the harem tropes. TM fans must be happy they got a lot of the original dub cast back.

You're not wrong. I have zero interest in this spin-off, but might actually buy the abject letdown that was OVA 4 if Petrea Burchard reprises Ryoko in that too.

So, they got Petrea Burchard back to voice Ryoko, but they couldn't find KT Vogt for Washu?

I guess it hardly matters, with the franchise in the shape it's in.

Great to see most of the original cast back. A damn shame about Ayeka and Washu (especially Washu), but we knew that was coming. Also cool to see Brianne and Julie back in something new. Cherami Leigh as Ayeka is very odd casting, but hopefully she'll work out.

At the very least, this should be worth watching for Petrea Burchard. Her performance as Ryoko is such an iconic and classic part of the franchise, and I cannot picture anyone else in the role.

For all the complaints about later Tenchi Muyo installments, have people actually gone back and WATCHED the original OVAs recently?

I don't think the classic series has aged particularly well.

It's not as funny as it once was and I was never that in love with the dub cast, either. I was one of those fans that got it on laserdisc in the days when closed captioning wasn't a common feature on TV sets back then so I HAD to listen to the dubs.

Now that I've heard the Japanese cast and have the subs to follow, well, it's -- Pioneer made some questionable casting choices for the English dub voices, IMHO. Let me say this without pointing directly -- they tend to cast the girls a bit too old-sounding sometimes and it has NOTHING to do with the real age of the actress because even the late 80-something (at the time) Janet Waldo STILL sounded like a teenager when she was voice acting. I felt a number of the girls who were "allegedly" teens sounded middle-aged. On the other hand, I always felt Rebecca Forstadt (who's gotten a LOT of shit from anime fans over the years) was perfectly cast as Mihoshi.

I also found it out odd that not everything was re-released on Blu ray in the States, either. I know that technically the Mihoshi Galaxy Police OVA that introduced her partner, Kiyone, wasn't a direct part of the original series but it wasn't included with the series 1 and 2 on the Funimation Blu ray release. It's a little side story that gives a bit more background to Mihoshi and GP.

Glad to see Matt and Petrea back in their respective roles again. Shame they can't get Jennifer Darling back as Ayeka, but still -- Union rules, I suppose. As for that earlier comment: from what I've looked up, K.T. Vogt is still active... but now resides in Oregon.

This show is listed in the SAG/AFTRA Database so it's not exactly union-related.

I'm glad someone finally said it. If you ask me, while a lot of plot and narrative decisions are RANCID with Early Installment Weirdness and plot points that never pay off (Ryoko attacking Tenchi when they first met only to later reveal that she's always had a thing for him, Sasami's odd mischievous streak in her introduction, Tenchi's grandpa being revealed to be a powerful warrior from Jurai only for that plot point to go nowhere, etc.), the first season of Ryo-Ohki is probably the most entertaining part of the franchise. It's a real shame that they decided to stick with this version of the story when it comes to continuations considering how flawed it's always been, and how as it goes on, the flaws only become worse and worse. Sigh... the Tenchi-verse should have remained vague and mysterious, because the more they actually explain the intricacies of it, the more awful the series becomes.

Ryo-Ohki season one was great but flawed. It's like if you only had the good parts of Iron Man 2 or something. Season 2 was... mixed, but still overall entertaining. Season 3 was where they introduced a bunch of new girls and sidelined the harem that we actually cared about, and season 4 amplified that problem to the nth degree.

If you ask me, the series of Tenchi that has aged the best is actually probably Tenchi Universe. It was far simpler, but also had a lot more confidence in what it was doing. Easily, in terms of series, OVAs or Television, I had the most fun watching Universe overall (though season one of Ryo-Ohki taken on its own had a tiny bit more enjoyment). I actually introduced a friend to Tenchi through the movies and Universe, and when he finally watched Ryo-Ohki, he was weirded out and disappointed. Makes me wonder how anyone here would feel watching it for the first time without nostalgia goggles.

Here's the big difference between Ryo-Ohki and Universe. Ryo-Ohki started promising, but got worse as it went along. Universe started... standard, and got more entertaining as it went along. I highly recommend people go back and watch Ryoko's "Death" scene from Universe one more time. It has a surprising amount of heart behind it. There's also a certain charm to the harem escaping through the stars as fugitives together. It builds a sort of bond that I don't think the OVAs truly earned.

I think it is a case of it being familiar with the original English dub voices, a friend of mine for example went out of his way to track down Sailor Moon on DVD, with the original dub. He hadn't even watched the uncut version with the new dub, but he still wanted to watch the old version.

It has its moments. I still like the first season of OAVs, but mostly for the animation quality. When it comes to story, I much prefer the Universe TV spin-off.

Even back in the '90s, I initially thought the English casting was a bit odd for the same reasons. However, after watching a number of episodes the voices grew on me. Even though they don't sound at all like the Japanese voices, I thought the voice directing was well done. While I agree the Japanese version has better casting, it would be difficult for me to watch an English version where the voices sounded different from the way I've associated hearing those characters in English.

I've read it wasn't included with the license to the original OAVs when Funimation got it. They may have had to also license the Pretty Sammy OAVs and TV series to get it, which there probably isn't as much demand for. Also, the Mihoshi Special doesn't have an HD remaster in Japan. The only master of that available seems to be one made for laserdisc.

Yeah, there's some kind of plot, but the whole thing is told out of order and made absolutely no sense to me.

From what I heard Jennifer Darling is kind of retired and KT Vogt is involved with Shakespeare in Protland and she is not available. See link below https://www.funimation.com/forum/topic/16185/ai-tenchi-muyo-voice-actor/3?page=1

Coincidentally, I’ve been watching the OVA series this week, plus connecting parts of GXP (mostly ignoring the actual plot to see the interactions with Juraians, Fuku, and the original cast) and now finishing with Geminar.

When I watch the OVA series I’m actually surprised at how much more I like it each time. I too was disappointed in OVA 3 when it came out, and stunned at the wasted potential of OVA 4 but what I always notice is how deceptively complex the story can get. The world just keeps expanding and expanding, revealing possible potential (that sadly probably will never be properly resolved).

But I’m thinking that if they want to really move forward, connect the main Tenchi series with Geminar, the purely expository final episode of OVA4 could be necessary.
The next step would be the “rescue” of Kenshi by Tenchi and crew, connecting the dimensions in some way that maybe only Tenchi would be capable of.

Universe on the other hand… I can barely watch it now. The characters are as simple as the OVA characters are complicated. I think I was most annoyed by Mihoshi who went from an airheaded agent of luck and causality (with an unexplained tragic backstory) to a lobotomized nitwit who has no reason to exist. But that simplification runs across the cast. Can you tell me WHY Ryoko and Ayeka like Tenchi? I can’t remember one. They just do.
If Tenchi was the birth of the modern harem than Tenchi Universe was the birth of making that harem a collection of empty clichés. Ryoko is just a crass unthinking jerk, Ayeka is just a grating ojou-sama, Washu is just a funny mad scientist.
I admit that the second half plot improves things but first you have to suffer through Time and Space Adventures and other crap… And the second half still has the occasional story like “Ryoko takes everyone’s money, spends a week on a beach, and leaves her friends to starve on a spaceship without fuel.”

BTW- The Mihoshi special is funny, but it's non-canon to the OVA. NO one even checked to see if the name "Kiyone" was taken yet... which it was (Tenchi's mother).
I'd say that Kajishima didn't hate it too much though. After all, Noike really is just another version of Kiyone.
