First episode of this new season made me so confused. How do S2 and S3 connect? I mean, i feel like im missing a ton of information I remember this of S2 ep 12 After waking up in Anteiku, he hears someone mention that "making coffee is difficult." When the person comes out, it is revealed to be Hide. By the time that Kaneki realises that he has his ghoul eye activated, Hide tells him "I Knew." Hide and Kaneki are drinking some coffee in which was horrible. Hide tells him that he realized Kaneki was a ghoul when Nishio was beating the crap out of Hide and Kaneki came to his rescue. Hide states that it took all that he had to stay conscious when he collapses. It is revealed that Hide had been wounded whilst trying to take him to Anteiku. As Hide is drifting in and out of consciousness he says to Kaneki "Lets go home." Touka is seen running toward Anteiku when she collapses and starts crying when she sees Anteiku burning down. She notices that Kaneki is walking out carrying something in his arms. Touka chases after Kaneki when a large piece of rubble falls down when it is shot down by what looks like a hardened version of her Kagune. Touka continues chasing after Kaneki when she runs into Renji. Renji states that if something were to happen he had one last order from Yoshimura. Touka witnesses Kaneki walking toward the CCG when it was revealed what he was carrying. Kaneki was carrying Hide's dead body. Kaneki came face-to-face with Arima (CCG's ace). After the credits Touka opens up a new cafè called :re.

The two don't connect, season 2 was a filler adaptation with only certain events actually happening in the manga. Season 3 is an adaptation of the Re manga as apposed to a continuation of season 2.

Yeah I would suggest you to read the manga. Re; is an adaptation of the manga of the same name which follows the original Tokyo Ghoul Manga. Root A however did things differently. Thus Re; is a sequel to the manga and not to Root A.

That is totally confusing. Hah. Good thing the story parts of this show was the least interesting. Gore porn!

So yeah, you can go ahead and ignore the last episode of Root A. And you should, because Re: sure does. There is no way to continue into Re: unless you ignore that shitty ending Root had. WTF where they thinking?

Tokyo Ghoul:Re is not a sequel to Tokyo Ghoul Root A.
Tokyo Ghoul:Re is a sequel to the Tokyo Ghoul manga so if you really want to understand what is going on then please read the manga

This is so dumb.
They never finished adapting the Tokyo Ghoul manga.
They made Root A which completely made up its own thing.
Then they adapt Tokyo Ghoul:re which picks up after the original series that the original anime never even finished adapting.
Imagine if Toei never animated the marineford arc in OP and just makes a sequel series to OP assuming you know everything thats happened from the manga, even though they never adapted said content in the anime.
This release makes no sense.

Honestly people, as someone who has never read The Tokyo Ghoul Re manga...this was not hard to follow at all. What are you all talking about?
Obviously a time skip occurred, obviously SOMETHING happened to Kaneki where he lost his memories... The last time we saw him he was squaring off against Arima, where I am sure we will get flashbacks explaining exactly WHAT happened to him in the meantime.
While I know Root A did its own thing, I also know that it was VERY similar to the manga in how the overall events played out. How anyone could be confused by this is beyond me. Root A cut out the Arima vs Kenaki fight....fine...okay....but the implication from Root A's ending is that they fought anyway...so why the confusion?
Unless you want everything spelled out for you in the first 5 minutes? From my understanding the RE manga didn't even do that, so...in the end...maybe wait for answers while watching the show? Just a suggestion, but I feel like it makes sense.

Root A's previous director, Morita Shuhei, claims in a recent Reddit AMA that the original plan was always for Root A to be anime-original, per the request of Ishida Sui. However, their attempts were "chipped away" by higher-ups who desired Root A to be faithful to the manga. He claims to have done his best to follow the original plan in spite of the restrictions imposed upon him.

Assuming this is the truth, it means Root A's problem was a conflict of 2 competing visions, the work level vs the higher committee level.

From what I heard, the first episode adapts 6 chapters. So will it actually stop at 58? Who knows.

I have to say I agree with you. I didn't feel lost at all with the first episode of :re, and I've looked into it since I've seen so many comments about how season 2 was poorly handled or that it wouldn't work to jump straight into :re, and from what I can tell, Root A covered the important events leading up to it. Maybe it was done differently, but not so much that it is confusing. And like you said, the gaps there at the end can be filled in, and I'm willing to bet that it will be handled by spreading bits of it in different episodes.
