Thank you for relaying Yuki Suetsugu's message. Hopefully somewhere a collector of the original artwork sees one of these appeals and approaches her or Be Love staff to make the drawings temporarily available for her upcoming exhibition.

I remember when these were being sold on Yahoo Japan. I bid on one of them but they sold for a couple thousand dollars each.
I wish her good luck in finding them. Most of the time, these just go into collections and never see the light of day again. I'd offer to lend them the charity auction sketch I won at Anime Expo when the Chihayafuru character designer and director attended, but I'm not sure if I'd want to use that sketch to test the waters when it comes to international transactions. |

Yuki Suetsugu mentioned on Twitter that someone had previously contacted them about four of the works but the original drawings pictured in Jennifer Sherman's article for ANN have apparently not yet been located as of today. Hopefully the owners of these watercolours too can be found so that arrangements can be made for the display of those remaining items as well.
Among the artwork she is still looking for are her original illustrations which have a significant place in the publication history of her Chihayafuru manga as well. Among other places these drawings have appeared in print on the dust jackets of the original Japanese Tankōbon volumes for the first, second and seventeenth volumes in the series, as well as on title pages for individual chapters. |

I think that, if they wanted to be found, they would have already have come forward and volunteered. In the case of the sketches that were sold on Yahoo Japan - It really could have been to anyone, both those living in Japan and those living abroad. It was not uncommon for foreigners to use deputy services in 2011 & 2012 to buy items on Yahoo Japan. There was even a deputy service that, for about 2 years after the tragedy, waived all deputy fees on those items. But let's, for the same of a good discussion, assume that one of these sketches was won by a foreigner. With Japan's recent talk about production artwork and original sketches drawn by various mangaka and animation artists now being considered national treasures, what sane international collector would consider sending the artwork back for a temporary loan when the government could possibly seize it? I own some production artwork and a couple of original sketches from the anime version of the series and would not even remotely consider sending anything on loan to them after all this talk about their newly considered 'national treasure' needing to be returned to Japan. The second case regarding the slip jacket illustrations is more concerning. Someone internally at her publisher sold these images and in that case, no one will ever come forward with this images. They might appear for sale in a couple decades on Mandarake or Yahoo Japan, but right now, definitely not. Inside sources would be compromised and those collectors who bought those images could be punished. |

The way I see it, Yuki Suetsugu unselfishly relinquished some of her greatest personal treasures, of great personal as well as monetary value. She did so to raise as much money as she could by donating these precious items to the auction and donating the funds raised to the relief effort. She is now requesting to have these items returned to her temporarily, on loan, with assurances the items will be returned after they've been exhibited publicly for her many fans.
From the comment Yuki Suetsugu posted on Twitter it sounded like the people who contacted her about four of the items did so within the last few days. More exposure will alert others that a search for other artwork is still ongoing. Hopefully more people, other custodians of these important pieces, will come forward and decide to make her original artwork available for the upcoming exhibition(s) of her work, in celebration of her remarkable career. |

Since March 18, the online English edition of Asahi Shimbun, in the Asia & Japan Watch section, has a write up for the upcoming exhibition, "Translated by The Asahi Shimbun from the website of Anime Anime Japan Ltd. ANIME NEWS: ‘Chihayafuru’ exhibition set for Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka in spring.
No mention of the -ongoing- search for some of Yuki Suetsugu's original artwork, unfortunately. |
