Voices of a Distant Star was made by Makoto Shinkai, he did the animation all by himself without a crew of animators. i would like one day to create my own animation studio.
i'm in university and i'm going into the animation program soon. does anyone know what i should expect? i figured since one guy already did an animation all by himself i said to myself why not? or i could make a studio. Apparently I will need a budget, a loan from a bank, hired animators. a reputation probably.... |

Well, if you've got the tools to do it, do a project by yourself. Once you've done it, post it on Youtube, try to get it featured.
As for getting together a studio, don't go making plans. Being a university student, I don't think you have the funds to pay a team of animators and equip them properly. I doubt they'd work for a no-name amateur who's still in school either. Sorry for sounding harsh, but it's true. Stay in school, and do some projects on your own. Share them via the internet. That's my advice. |

Does animating require programming knowledge by any chance? Perhaps, that's a stupid question but I'm a high school student and am unknowing of many things like this.

Yes, in the animation industry, there are different types of software and hardware needed in order to create it. Software such as adobe photoshop and Maya are the two most popular ones used today in animation productions.
i am learning about them because i will taking an animation degree program and my portfilio in order to enter the program reguires me to be familiar with software like this. |

Heh, photoshop is amazing!
Well, that's understandable, I'm not sure what Maya is but what in particularly in programming would I have to know? Learning coding on Visual Basic wasn't fun to say the least. And I know they're using Java now for the Grade 12 class, so it went a step up in the program used but cpding isn't very appealing nonetheless. |

i am not familiar with what you are studying, and i am not sure myself since i am learning about. i just know that in the industry it is required to know your software very well.
there are many different types of animators out there and some focus more on one aspect of the program than others. it depends what you want to do in animation because there are many fields to choose from. |

Well, what we did was coding, creating programs and such. Nothing in terms of animation. Though we did create a neat little game which due to the laggy computers at our school, you'd basically die before even knowing you started.
![]() I guess we'll both just have to learn along the way. |

lol....yeah.
good old school computers, it wiped out my essay once and i remember just wanting to smash it to bits. lol ![]() no, the software i know doesn't have anything to do with creating programs or coding, its more about the techniques in creations in terms of lighting, background, character design, etc...the list is endless. yeah, my dream is to open up my own studio, create animation, right now i'm going to start working on a manga, i have so many story ideas, my head is going to explode! ![]() hey, i'm new to this website, how do you put a picture to your profile. i don't have one yet and i'd like to know how to do it ![]() [EDIT: Do NOT double-post. Use the "Edit" button if you want to add something to a your post.~Zalis] |

I'd love to do what you seemingly are planing ot do. Especially since I'm a fantastic writer (that's not just pride, it's true)
![]() Note his attempt to draw Envy, and perhaps another one of the homunculi though I can't remember who. |

If you want to know what it's really like, you should read up on Bill Plympton, who has made an entire career out of doing pretty much every aspect of the animation process on his lonesome.

![]() ![]() however, if you can't draw, have you considered the filmmaking industry? you could be a screen writer. basically a director takes an idea that is suggested to him by a screen writer and turns it into a movie. |

I've considered many ventures with my writing. However, yuo don't NEED to be able to draw to animate. That's what character designers and such are for.
![]() Of course, if you want to do it all by yourself then drawing is much more important unless you have a partner to handle that but you don't actually need to be a superb artist per se to animate and get into the animation field. as for your question before, just go to where it says Forum just below the Search bar in the top right of the site. Click on profile, find an avatar or make one since you have photoshop, upload with a site like imageshack.us and then scroll down the profile page, copy/paste the Direct link to the image into where it says Upload Avatar with a URL (or something along those lines) and click OK or whatever it says (I don't visit my profile much but it's straightforward). And you got an avatar. |
