Okay, so I totally spoofed off the 'Animes that made us realize we were sissy girls' thread...
Ah well.
Now this is hard to say but...I used to watch Dragon Ball Z, and I love it....*whew* that was hard.
I just love an intense fighting scene. Especially when you throw magic wielders into there, and the occasional dragon.
I like robots, fighting, and other manly animes.
Not to say that I don't like the girly ones (which I do very much).
But that's not what this thread is about.
So put down the first anime that made you realize you were a manly girl. Hee hee.

Rurouni Kenshin, when spoiler[Kenshin squared off against Saito]. I don't think I breathed during that whole scene, and that is still one of the best fight scenes I've ever seen.

I watch quite a bit of "boy" anime though. Love all the gun/sword fighting scenes: Samurai Champloo, Kenshin, Hellsing OAV, Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon.

Not that I don't love my shoujo bishies, or a good cry as well. I just like to mix it up a bit.

As a man -- I'll cite Goldenboy as a source of pure manliness. Twisted Evil It's a complete satire on how guys think about women.

I'm not going to say anime is primarily a girl's hobby, because it's obvious that's not true. However, there's no doubt the ratio between girl fans and guys are pretty high, regardless of the series.

Actually the poll conducted by ANN a while back shows anime is primarily a male dominated pass time in almost all of the age groupings. Judging from persononal experience I'd also say that was the case, though I would also contest that there are more female manga fans than my gender whenever I'm browsing that section.

It's a thread for women to comment on shows they like which they think are overly male oriented.

I'm just here to observe (being male), don't mind the guy in the corner. *whistles nonchalantly* Smile

I've always been a "manly" girl, if that's what you mean. Most series I see are shounen series, beginning by my fave one. And it's thanks to that series that I turned into a football (soccer) freak.

Well, when I first got into anime I tried to like all of the stuff that I saw girls reading; I immersed myself in Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, Fruits Basket (which I never got very far with) and Tokyo Mew Mew. However, I've always loved movies with loads of stylized fighting (The Matrix, V for Vendetta, Lord of the Rings, etc.). That sort of started to surface when I started watching Shaman King religiously (although I think SK is pretty candy-fluff as far as shounen goes), but came to a head shortly after my 13th birthday, when my aunt and uncle thoughtfully took me to see the first Appleseed movie at a nearby art school for no reason other than that it was anime and they knew I liked that stuff. They were even nice enough to get me the first volume of the manga beforehand (although as I later found out the two have little to do with each other). Anyway, just watching all those totally pointless and mind-blowing action sequences was like a huge sigh of relief. I wasn't feigning interest like I had with the shoujo drama stuff; even though there was barely a plot to speak of, I was genuinely on the edge of my seat for almost the whole film. When the lights came up and everyone started to file out of the theater, I looked around and realized that I was one of maybe three girls there Anime hyper

I enjoy a good sappy romance now and again; I absolutely devoured NANA, and Marmalade Boy is my guilty pleasure. Also, my two favorite series are both 'for guys', but strike a nice balance between action and human emotion. Still, give me something like Cowboy Bebop or Saiyuki over Generic School Romance Comedy #776 any day.

Werd.

While I was in high school, a friend told me I had to watch Golden Boy because I reminded him so much of the main character, Kintaro. After seeing the first episode, I took it as both a compliment and an insult!

Laughing

Also, Knights of Ramune made me realize how much of a "manly girl" I was, with it's blatant lesbian innuendos and liberal use of nudity.

Actually Zac stated in one of his Answerman columns that the fandom over here is predominantly female.

As long as they keep making more figures for us to waste our money on who cares what gender the anime fandom primarily is? Wink

Depends on where you are, I guess- hells, it might not even be as clear-cut (geographically) as I might think; for example, I recently attended two anime cons barely an hour or so apart from each other, and from my POV the gender difference between the two was not only very noticeable between these two places, but also depended on the time of day. When the survey was conducted and where could have skewed the results, which is why they're not that reliable if you ask me.

Anyway, enough thread derailing! Let's get back to what gets the ladies' testosterone running!

There's just more things that appeal to girls stylistically- Bright colors, the relative high, loud voices (english or Japanese), the bright, big colorful eyes and hair, the cute character designs of the female characters, and the hot sexxxay effeminate designs of the "bishies," if there's a mascot, then those, mannerisms, and certain plot devices. Almost all of these are prevalent in any series, whether it be Death Note or Haruhi (forgive me, I'm not up to date on what's current).
