"which I've come to see as a bittersweet virtue compared to some total snoozefests I've had to review like Sagrada Reset. (I wish someone had set a herd of sheep on fire in that show."
One of the best show of 2017
but I agreed with the rest on kino

Quote: | I can only assume that this is meant to serve as a culminating display of Kino's badassery for fans of that aspect of the character, because otherwise it's just insane. Who is this for? There's no message here, and the “twist” at the end doesn't add anything to this wanton slaughter – it's just an explanation of where the killer sheep came from. Wasn't this show supposed to be a series of little moral parables at one point? |
Shows don't need to be only one thing exclusively. You're just supposed to sit back and enjoy the ridiculousness of Kino fighting some irate sheep. But there is a message there about how humans carelessly releasing domesticated animals into the wild can have bad consequences.
In the end the show was about showcasing how different cultures can have different customs and values. Kino is just a passive observer for the most part. She knows it's not her place to pass judgement on others for having a different standards. Compare this to Shizu who is more prone to meddling and it never turns out well for him. The show itself doesn't pass judgement either. It just presents the stories as they are and it's up to the viewers to come to their own conclusions.
But since Kino is a human and not some heartless machine, there are a few cases where she does get involved and can't keep her neutrality. But that just makes her, you know, an actual character.
Well one thing's for sure. If watching the 03 version is going to turn me into grump that can't enjoy a show like this for what it is, then I'm never going to watch that version.

Kino was actively participating in most of the chapter she was in. Hell she valued a mural on a wall over people's live to the point where she was okay with shooting people just to save the mural (people who weren't hostile to anyone until they were attacked). That's not a passive observer at all.

Wow, yeah the old one was good, a great show. But it seems rather over idolized if you think this new one wasn't a decent anime itself. I hope you watched it very recently and aren't just using those nostalgia goggles.

I'll just say this: most of Kino's morals aren't as face value as the reviewer seems to believe. Even the episodes she liked was analyzed for something different from what it was trying to say.
Now, this adaptation had problems, and we can't deny that. There're phrases cut from the LN that should be here and it would make a lot more of sense.
Now, to say the ship country episode was about genocide, for example, is really silly and missing the point of the episode.

What? |
he's talking about Sigsawa, the creator of Kino. He wrote Sword Art Online: Alternative Gun Gale Online and i guess he's talking about how we will really see if he's a good writer or not with this one. |
Eh, SAO GGO was pretty different than Kino, if they want his story with good plot they better off watching Allison & Lilia anime instead of Gun Porn: The Anime.

That was one of the few episodes I thought actually was applicable to real life, being a metaphor for modern status-quo warriors who deny life-threatening problems at any cost just to maintain their unsustainable but comfortably familiar way of life. Not that the series did a good job of presenting it well...
But this episode... not exactly a fun way to wrap it up, although the hammock vignette was fine. I'll just look at the series as a bad dream she had on a sunny day.

In the mural's case her actions were largely insignificant. She had no impact on how either country operated, just sparing the feelings of some kids. The moving country wasn't in any real danger and was going to pass through the other country even if Kino did nothing. Kino didn't hurt anyone on the other side either.

I watched the old Kino anime for the first time a month before this new one aired because I thought the new one might be a sequel.
New Kino was pretty lame, 4.5/10
Old Kino could have been a 7 but got boring from time to time so it was a little hard to marathon so I gave it a 6.5/10.
The Life Goes On ova got a 7/10 from me.
Overall I think the whole thing is overrated and heavy handed with it's world view. Reminded me a lot of Planetes in that way.

She used high powered rifle to shoot at truck carrying explosive in a chaotic situation (with plenty of civilian around) to save... a mural. Any number of things could have happened, the trucks could have veered slightly of course and the bullet could have shoot a soldier or even trigger one of the explosive missile which could have miss fired and hit civilian. All that to save...a temporary mural that was going to be erased soon anyway, had no value whatsoever and belong to the people responsible for the entire event in the first place. No one event asked her to do that. Best case scenario is that she just enjoyed shooting at stuff (even if real human are involved).

Not the very worst series of the year but the most outright disheartening. The lesson to learn from this, if you are going to make a new adaption of a title that already got a great one already then bring people with vision to the table and don't just make another one for sake of it. Also more proof that source material can really be improved upon.

Don't let someone's opinion on a thing discourage you from watching it. '03 Kino took a while to grab me, but I like it - more than this version but not as much as everyone else.
Quote: | If this series is the one that's more faithful to the source material, then original recipe Kino's is just not for me |
This anime wasn't a perfect adaptation by any means - one of my favorite stories in the volume was adapted and got a 'meh' reaction out of me - so do try the one volume officially translated if you ever feel like it. The only story this season can say adapted more faithfully than '03 is really Coliseum by not adding things, but as mentioned before in this thread it also just didn't include a lot of what the novel had. It's not as political or philosophical as a lot people seem to like their Kino being, but it's still worth your time.

Sounds like this version turned you into a grump that can't enjoy the 03 version for what it is.

Thanks Gabriella, your review got me to check out Ep12 and I haven't had as good a laugh in a while! The moral is clearly "animal rights activists cause trouble" though. Not very thoughtful and on the whole, marauding sheep is worthy of Monty Python. I might actually check out the rest to see if it is ironic watching material, certainly seems like it might be.
