That sounds like a fair review. I started with the manga version and thought it was pretty good, so the light novels must be pretty amazing.

I definitely agree that seeing the visuals is much different from reading it. There's also the fact that the novel uses a half sentence, almost in passing, to remark on what's happening, but the manga... I wouldn't necessarily say it "dwells" on it, but for how much value each panel has in a manga and how short a chapter is compared to a novel's chapter, it spends a larger percentage of its resources depicting the scene than you would expect when comparing the novel to the manga.

Actually, she's called like that because of her job. In japanese she's called 牛飼娘 (Ushikai Musume) literally "the woman that raising/tending cattle. Her bust doesn't have anything with her name. |

Why's the manga so rape-y if the light novels, according to ANN's review, completely avoided it?

It wasn't avoided in the light novels it just wasn't detailed. The manga shows you more of what the LN barely covered. |

That would have been my assumption based on the American/Canadian definition of "cowgirl," written as one word. I definitely hope you're right, but I've seen a few too many busty women in anime and manga denigrated as "cows" with specific reference to their bosoms to trust that's true just yet... |

Well what most people actually like about GS is the badassery and intensity of GS himself and the fast paced action but not so much for the rape stuff unless youre into that

Yeah... while I like the vast majority of Goblin Slayer's take on the violence and brutality of the creatures they're dealing with - as well as just a more violent take on D&D and JRPGs - the way that the manga just started to dwell on the sexual violence was off-putting.
I personally like the manga overall (the character designs and armour designs are really nice to see at all times), but I will not sugar coat the fact that the manga likes to fetishize this content. It's worse in the Goblin Slayer Year One manga, which isn't really a glowing review either (and doesn't even really need to exist... at least not with the starting point that it goes for; as if they didn't learn anything from DC's Year One comics that they're imitating here). Thankfully, the light novels handle this content much better and leave a far better impression; the characters and stories are fantastic fantasy and provide a very interesting look at some of the content that gets "overlooked" within the typical D&D campaign or adventure.
I would just like to say that while there are novels from 50 years ago that are worse, there are plenty of modern fantasy novels that are absolutely atrocious for the usage of rape as a plot point; frequently in the worst way possible. Grimdark fantasy particularly, outside of some exceptions, are really bad for this sort of thing. |

I don't think that it's right to make assumptions based on that pattern, because goblin slayer inspired by board and card games like D&D and every character named by the role they play. And cow girl is named so because she's tends cattle, not because of her bust (which is average compared to some other characters). |

The key word here is "dwell." The gory violence has a point in the story, so it's easier to think "I don't like the violence, but I can see its purpose." The sexual violence has an academic purpose too, but it feels like the mangaka uses it to focus on women being raped or in compromising/revealing situations instead. When you compare it to the novel, where the author spends no or very little time describing it (the gory violence too is just stated simply, there's no lurid detail), it stands out. |

I started with the manga first and was a little off put by the early rape scenes, not that it was so shocking that it ruined the story or made me want to stop reading. It was more of ok lets get it over with so that I can continue to read the story and hopefully I won't have to see more of it which thankfully hasn't been a re-occuring theme.
Then I picked up the light novels and breezed through them really quickly between long periods of no customers at work and just couldn't put it down. The story is so easy to read and imagine vs other light novels with their science or magic mumbo jumbo that gets a little tiring and boring. Need to pick up volume 4 of the LN so that I can keep up with the story. Would really recommend the manga series to compliment the LN as their are scenes that are much more intense/exciting or funnier with actual pictures to go along with them. When comparing to the LN the manga only leaves out a phrase or small tid bit of dialouge so minor that you hardly notice it gone. While I will be the first to agree to how hypocritical many people are when it comes to violence in media, I would like to clarify what I said. My keyword was dwell. The Goblin Slayer manga does not leave you watching a man be ripped apart by the Goblins, but is more than ready to give you a front row seat to the raping of any women in the area. This itself is hypocritical for a work like this and does sour the perception of what it's going for. Berserk, another manga that handles sexual violence better than GS, doesn't dwell purely on that violence. The brutality of the rest of the world is always on display as much, if not more, than the violence here. Something that GS'anga struggles with slightly. |
