The LNs are on a long hiatus, or so I may have heard.
Meanwhile, the manga apparently came to an end.

Good...I hope not to see that high horse annoying brat of a Girl Haruhi again in anime.
Can't say the same about Kyon and the others

The sad truth
What's worse, however, is that some of the light novels are out of print, according to RightStuf.

And yet the series is more abandoned than a haunted house ...

It's not that the manga came to an end, it's more that the manga didn't have any choice but come to an end.

Sad, but we're not necessarily missing out on much. At least for me, the last two-parter novel was a horribly edited, boring mess that did bring up a number of very interesting themes but never got beyond characters contemplating their navels.

Or rather a Song of Ice and Fire. On the other hand, the entire run of Haruhi Suzumiya was released in the time that GRR Martin did the last two books.
I know the problem he ran into... his original plot synopsis called for a five year time skip that just doesn't work; The TV series worked around it because everyone's aged naturally so the audience never asks "wait, how old are the Stark children again?"; They also killed off the youngest just so they didn't have to deal with his age.... but in the case of Haruhi Suzumiya, I imagine the last book would be "The Suicide of Haruhi Suzumiya" which ironically would happen in the previous book. and the book would be about anything but that. Unfortunately, the main work itself is mired in mind numbing world building which is also a problem of the GRR series, especially in the last two books.
Cut the clutter, rebuild the world and end the series.... or rather, end the series and then clean it up. A big old reset button is a luxury GRR doesn't have.

Wow, the Haruhi novels actually have an overall plot synopsis...?! Was it leaked? Is it available somewhere? It's quite shocking to me because I've been getting the impression that the author was at something of a loss where and how to continue the overall plot...

Wait. I don't get it. Why did Kadokawa made this announcement though?
Yes, it's a great achievement. But usually, these kinds of announcements are to incite more people into buying, right? Is this a sign there's a new book coming on the horizon?
Goddamit. The Haruhi Suzumiya fever was so last decade. Something about this pisses me off.

Considering the last TMoHS LN came out in Japan in late 6/2011, I would think the creators are now just lazy. Sure there could be family/personal issues, but one would think that a lot of may have been sorted out in those almost 6.5 years.

'In print' is not exactly accurate, given that I've been waiting for my light novel order for 9 months now...

Well, this reminds me...I've been meaning to re-read this series. I liked how the last released LN left things.

The light novels will continue in 2018. The anime will also continue in 2018 or 2019. Subtle activity behind the franchise over the years is cause for suspicion.
