Considering that the anime sold on average 1k per volume it is unsurprising that he got nothing from the anime. Using the manabe line rule it probably means that it cost more to make the anime than BD sales made.
What is surprising is that he gets nothing from merchandise sales. His contract must suck for that to be the case! |

Well... you can't recieve profits from the anime if the anime didn't MAKE a profit.

As long as the anime gave the manga a giant boost, then it still makes sense to produce more anime. The same thing happened to Chihayafuru, as much as I'm sure people don't want to admit it. The anime more or less bombed on home video in Japan, but it did gangbusters in terms of promoting the manga, so the second season still got greenlit. |

The anime didn't really have high production values, it was mainly made to promote the manga. Real problem here, is that he didn't received a fee for getting he's manga adapted to anime. Hope he doesn't get screw over with the live action movie as well.

As has been mentioned millions of times sales of the BD's have little to do with an anime being a success. If it boosts the original source sales (which it did) then it's a success. That 1k per volume is from Oricon which is pretty much the standard people use to track sales. Not sure why you consider them a poor source? You can see a summary at http://www.someanithing.com/. One final comment, the author is not getting "screwed over" if he doesn't get a payment from the making of the anime. The anime itself lost money. He gained money by increased manga sales. |

This way of thinking being so prevalent in Japanese culture is a big part of the reason creators get screwed so badly in Japan in the first place. |

Shueisha only cares about a boost in manga sales, look at My Hero Academia, that doesn't turn a profit and it is very popular, and is still one of the most successful franchises in anime and manga currently. Tokyo Ghoul didn't do well in sales, and they rushed out a second season. |

Yes, I know the anime show of Saiki K. didn't fare that well, but it's still painfully disheartening that the mangaka never saw any money from the show itself...

He did. The manga sales were boosted leading to cash in his back pocket. |

this is nothing new really, even if it was successful sales-wise, the lions share of the profits would go directly to the producers and executives. it's a top-heavy system and it will most likely remain that way as the artists have little to no bargaining power.

Keijo the actual numbers were something like 10x more than what they reported. I never meant to say they were an untrustworthy source. |

Shueisha is not the only company responsible for producing the anime. There are many that do not have a stake in the source material, and as such do not profit from a boost in sales. The Production committee is as follows TV Tokyo Shogakukan Productions Pony Canyon Nippon Columbia KlockWorx Asmik Ace Entertainment Shueisha |
