Think there'll be some gangs from both cons who get into fights to prove their cons are better?

Consensus is that AX's 17,000 number is rounded down; also, the counting methodology of both cons (i.e., exactly what does the number represent - badges sold, or total badges issued, including staff, guests, associates, etc.) is still unclear.

Yeah, I'm surprised this news was actually run with such a close and unclear margin. I highly doubt that AX had exacly 17,000 attendants, but if they don't contend this then it might be reasonable to believe they rounded up instead of down.

Plus, there's the matter of all those hanging chads from the attendees in Florida

That'd be interesting to see. Not that gangs are good, but the thought of someone dressed as Duo and Vash duking it out seems kind of ridiculous. And I know what the prize would be! A year supply of Pocky! |

If A-Kon is number 3 with 7,403 admissions, then someone forgot to mention BAAF. From their site: "attendance at BAAF 2003 exceeded 12,000 paid admissions, a 60% increase over BAAF 2002!" Looks like we need a recount!!

Hmm, I have some doubts about A-Kon being the third largest. BAAF 2003 is touting over 12,000 paid attendees. Even taking into consideration minor errors in counting and counting methodology, I doubt they actually had less than A-Kon's ~7,500.
Secondly, and I'll leave this bit of information here for people to chew on, but an anonymous source (God, I hate that expression, but I can't word it any differently) in the Otakon staff disclosed to me a while back that AX's attendance statistics have been traditionally inflated due to counting AX Staff, vendors, etc. Obviously I cannot confirm this myself, so this may have been told to me out of jealousy, but it does prove somewhat interesting. EDIT: beat me to it, dramzan. :) _______________________________ Kain, Dean of Academics www.animeacademy.com Last edited by Kain on Tue Dec 23, 2003 10:59 pm; edited 2 times in total |

Well, in any case, I don't think a statistician would accept this as proof that Otakon is necessarily larger than Anime Expo or vice versa, because as far as the figures reported (and the presumption has to be that vendors or not, 17,000 must be the accepted number, since there's no clear proof otherwise), they are equal to the 2 significant digits that Anime Expo is reporting at. I couldn't rightfully believe that they are giving the exact count (especially since in the last 2 years, they gave 13,000 & 15,000).
Yeah, this is probably non-news (until next year, anyway ). |

Otakon does not count:
Staff Guests Dealers (A few others "groups") Its per person (no matter how long they stay). |
