It's a pretty unfortunate adaptation so far. The novels are not particularly noteworthy by themselves but they are at least enjoyable. This isn't even that. The art is not great ("Slip" made me cringe), the constant eyecatches used as segways are annoying and unnecessary, and a lot of what is being cut has actual relevance to character development, leaving them all just bland stock characters.

You mean "segue" - but you do remind me that I was reading an Isekai novel the other day and thinking the that the MC should re-invent the Segway for convoy escort missions.

Yes I did, I blame autocorrect for that mistake.

Now that you've said it, somebody is probably going to write an isekai where that happens!

So far it is rather predictable but I enjoy pleasant fantasy shows. I don't mind stories of heroes going around helping people but the story would benefit if they added a goal that wasn't solved within the same episode.

I was wondering about this one; like the reviewer said, these Isekai shows need some sort of angle to them, and it didn't seem like this had anything distinctive. These kinds of shows, where the protagonist begins the story overpowered, can be interesting; i enjoy both Deathmarch and Overlord, for example. But what I've heard about this series doesn't really pique my interest.

When this anime was announced, i remember being a bit annoyed that, out of all the potentially interesting isekai adaptions they could have made, this one was chosen. At least the Shield Hero anime was announced a couple weeks ago Smile

Smartphone's themes and plot structure is archetypal of isekai webnovels (written by most novice writers) you find on Shousetsuka ni Narou. These are the kinds of stories Konosuba was making fun of.

Note most of these stories are amateur-written labours of love allowing the reader (and writer) to self-insert themselves into a fantastic world as leisurely escapism, and are usually updated on a near-weekly (or daily) basis to please their followers who click on their page weekly/daily.

In line with relaxing escapism, the source WN falls into the category of "lighthearted fantasy-adventure", although there is a genre shift much later on into action-scifi things. (The anime may not have time to go that far.)

The novel ranks 83rd most read on Shosetsuka; not as popular as the similarly themed Death March (#7).

Quote:

Exploring the central conceit of the series should be its most interesting feature, but the titular smartphone is just an obligatory, utterly disposable aside.

The titular smartphone will be used more often later in the novels. In fact, the author himself apologized in Vol 1 for not featuring the smartphone enough!

Oh wait, let me reformulate that for you: "It´s an unfortunately terrible, horrible, not good, very bad, garbage, crappy, toilet-worthy light novel turned into an anime series that´s just as bland". I´ve heard little to none of its readers singing praises out of it. Read that novel again and notice that is bottom of the barrel. How this was chosen for a weekly review is beyond me.

Later when? When episode 12 is released? How can a smartphone be included in the series name, yet it´s not used for anything other than a freaking map? Sigh, it´s no use to falsely hype viewers with the use of the smartphone for nothing. I hope this series tanks as the dumpster fire it´s starting to be, as we live in a world where Masou Gakuen HxH sold more than 3,000 copies, unfortunately

Death March is the bottom of the barrel. Smartphone is what you find when you scrape Death March away. This is a novel series that makes you long for a tsundere character to show up, because at least that would be one character with a personality. Smartphone is yaoi in the original sense of the term -- no climax, no point, no meaning. It is nothing but distilled cliche.

Oh god that show was trash tier.

What's going to be fun to see is that when someone inevitably puts up the OP for this run of the mill isekai on youtube, there are going to be tons of comments begging for a season 2. It's cancer inducing.

At least Fairy Tail is ending next week. Some good news.

Death March was nowhere near bottom of the barrel. They are both slice of life shows with OP protagonist but DM did a much better job in its world building which made it more interesting out the gate. Smartphone fell flat on it face the moment the gate opened up.

Summing up what it sounds like, combined with my experience with other webnovels:

Not a story, so much as a daydream.

I expect that this show has an equal mix of genuine fans who want to see it discussed and other people who see it as a hilariously indulgent specimen of otaku wish fulfillment and want to see how bad the pandering gets. That mix is enough to vote it in. This should be an entertaining series of reviews.
