Despite how generic the main lead looks, I'll still watch this.

I don't like the character design because the manga ones are much better. The art at least. That said, i can't see anything wrong with them... Then again, i'm not one to not watch something because of a single "problem", so it might be that.

Why r people complaining about the art design?? They look almost the same as in the manga. It looks fine! I don't get all the hate towards the design.

The girls definitely look awful.
But then again, the whole design obviously adapted a style that women usually like, so the anime has quite a clear target audience.

I'm fine with the character designs as it is. There's no way they can use the same art as the manga without dropping the quality of the animation. The anime's design lend itself pretty well enough to the animation without straying too far from the manga's design, I'll take that anytime over faithful designs with little animation that is mostly moving pictures.

Except that if you're actually following the manga (which is shounen btw), the series actually has way more of a male following than the female ones. Make of that whatever you will.

How would you define a non-generic male lead for a shounen show?

I *love* the character designs for this! They're anything but generic, and have a very early 20th c feel to them. I can't wait to see the anime.

Considering a lot of modern ballroom dancing had its roots in the early 1900s (as in 1900-1909) and even into the 1910s, this seems appropriate.
