It's amazing they dubbed the whole movie with only four actors (three of whom passed away long ago).

The film was originally supposed to be about the Ainu people of Japan but got changed to a Norse setting for various reasons (hence the other English name). Horus is sometimes spelled as Hols (which sounds distinctly more Norse) and may have been intended that way but came out funky in the transliteration. |

I bought the DVD of this a while back good watch, it's interesting to see the progression of an artist from their first works having seen this and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.

I've seen it speculated that the scene where Shinji first meets Kaoru (Kaoru is sitting next to a ruined lake, singing) in Evangelion is an homage to the scene in which Hilda first appears.
It's definitely a film of its time, but certainly should not be missed by anyone who lines Takahata's later films. |

In the spanish version/dub I watched when I was a kid, he was called Hols, which sounds Northerner. |

I read once that in story planning, the title "prince of the sun" caused one of the crew to mistakenly recollect that Horus was supposed to be the Egyptian Sun-God (actually God of Sky and all in it) so they named the protagonist Horus and it is rendered that way in the Japanese. The English dub writer decided to correct this error and rename the character Hols thinking that better fit the obviously Norse setting.
v Edit for dm: The Japanese VAs say "Horus" as it is pronounced in English, maybe the VA director goofed? Apparently this issue will be explained in the BD commentary so having ordered it, I can't wait (squee~~) Last edited by Hiroki not Takuya on Thu Jun 08, 2017 10:51 am; edited 1 time in total |

"Hols" and "Horus" would be spelled the same in katakana, so who can say?

That commentary is actually different from the one on the DVD and Daniel went into detail about it which you can see here. |

Thanks for the heads-up on that; I was not aware of the update. And I will add: the BR version isn't that impressive, either, so the one on the DVD must have been truly hideous. |
