So digital download and mobile game is getting increasingly popular, while console market, which costs A LOT in development and advertising stages, keeps shrinking...
Ugh...definitely not a good sign for physical gaming.

I'd rather go back to non-record breaking times.

Seeing the value decline of home console hardware and software is a very bad sign. If the gaming world starts embracing an all-digital future, it'll be the end of gaming as we know it.
Edit: My sincere apologies, I made a grammatical error; fixed it.

Steam seems to be doing just fine last time I checked. Hell, a lot of Japanese developers have been embracing it for some time now.

Yeah, but a lot of good games and franchises will die without consoles, you don't see the yearly console Gundam titles on PC for example.

Wasn't the anime market 1.8 trillion? I always though the videogame market was bigger. Well, I think that depends on what you include as each market (Anime merchandise is itself 10-15 times bigger than disk sales).

The industry will adapt, as it always has. They'll go where the money is. And if certain producers don't, others will step up to take their place. Plus, taking the global gaming market as a whole, I don't think domestic console sales matter nearly as much to the likes of Sony and Microsoft as they did even a decade ago. There's a ridiculous amount of money out there now.

Man, we keep hearing about this end of times for console gaming... I don't buy it.
The PS4 is going strong and so is the Xbone. PC gaming is strong but I believe that Steam does more harm than good (btw, If I were Steam, I'd be worried because it's just a matter of time before all publishers start using their own environment/app for selling and launching games).
Mobile/PC "free" gaming is trash. Revenues are driven by ads and microtransactions. In addition, they don't provide stories or reasons for playing... Best example Pokemon Go and Candy crush... Both considered gaming yet you don't do anything worth while (story related).
We're still projected to go over 200M consoles for this generation with a 4 games attachment ratio. Digital sales will continue to increase due to comfort and flash pricing. Not to mentioned that the Hardcore console gamers aren't going to go anywhere and I'd venture to say that more are been created everyday.
Mobile gaming is truly a cancer though. It's imprinting the idea that you could access a game for "free" and dumbing down the whole system.

I think a few people are disregarding the fact that console gaming has never been terribly popular in Japan as it is in the West that and the fact handheld/mobile gaming is seen as more convenient.

Well, it's certainly not surprising. Mobile gaming is the most accessible kind of gaming there is, and it promises free (even if you'll get a frustrating experience with it), so of course people would be naturally drawn to it.

Well, people play games for the sake of playing them. You don't really need a reason to do so. The only people who play games for other reasons are gold farmers, scholars, and people who work in game development.
As for stories, not every game needs a story. Mario Kart, for instance, has never had a story, and it continues to be one of the top franchises for Nintendo. Heck, complex stories are a pretty new thing (not including text-based adventures and point-and-click adventures). Back in the 80's and 90's, most of these stories amounted to stuff like "Martians are invading. Stop them!" or "The princess has been kidnapped by this villain. Save her!"

Because the kind of games I like have been in steady decline as mobage have exploded.
The combined bar might be record-shattering but that's pretty much because of mobage alone (and god do I not want to ever return to that cesspool of exploitative byproducts), the colors representing more traditional options are almost gone.

I'm not sure what you define as 'a lot', but most Japanese games never see a PC release. And if they do, its years after they're relevent such as with Bayonetta or are poorly optimized ports. Steam isn't popular in Japan, so it's not as if Pokemon or Persona are going to jump ship to Steam if the 3DS or PS4 go under.

Problem with some games with a plot is that the story itself may be the weakest link.
