Sure hope this isn't the start of turning Japan into another tumblr society a la Sweden.

I already read the first 3 volumes in Japanese, but I still bought it because I enjoy a lot Gengoroh Tagame. And this one, I can actually share it to my friend! |

We're not talking about pornography here. The issue here is forced conformity in Japan, where citizens are strongly discouraged to do anything that stands out, hence that east Asian idiom. Homosexuality is one of those things that causes people to stand out, and Japan is still at that phase where they largely think that homosexual romance is an immature state of mind, something that they think people mature out of and move on to heterosexual romance when they reach adulthood. Japan is not some utopian paradise where everything they do is at the moral pinnacle of society and where everyone is enlightened. Just as there are many, many things wrong with western culture, there are many, many things wrong with Japanese culture too. The grass is always greener on the other side. |

my point being that as long as it is literature, it's ok, they don't care what gets published as long as the stuff that should not make it to kids does not make it to kids, going by what has happened, that stuff is explicit sexual content and slightly less explicit incestual sexual content. saying that this work should be put in the backburner of an indie something magazine it'sa big hyperbole , that's like saying that since california has more strict gun control regulations than the rest of the usa, they DO censor literature that invovles gun usage. freedom of speech is actually separate from what society actually allows and I rather keep it that way. in this case someone mentioned that this was published ina regular men's magazine, it's not even like yuri series being ublished in specialized yuri or (worse) lesbian interests magazines. |

I didn't say it should be in an indie magazine or that it belongs there, but that logically, these are where such stories would be placed in western publications because down-to-earth stories about social issues is a niche within a niche. You wouldn't see Marvel or DC publish stories like these for the simple fact that they don't really sell, and it's not within Image's, well, image. On the other hand, if this was a movie or a TV show, or even a novel, there'd be a lot more interest in it. It'd probably win awards. My original point was that I was astonished this would wind up in a publication with high circulation because I'm not used to western comics about similar topics and similar slow-paced normal-living stories ever getting high-profile releases. It's more a problem of societal pigeonholing of the comic book medium than anything else, really, because I WOULD like more stories like these all over the world to be more recognized. They just won't because people expect their comics to have action and adventure stories. (But I think it's the Comics Code Authority that crippled the medium, at least in the United States.) |

Absolutely, and the worst part is that the Code itself was completely arbitrary. During the Comics Code's strictest days, one comic got flagged because it showed a non-white astronaut.
Yeah, I hope this doesn't lead to fewer people being complete dickweeds to gay people, that would be a total tragedy. |

Since it's become so high-profile, I wonder if this will ever receive an anime adaptation. Which studio, if any, could possibly have the courage to make this into a show?

That was me and I think I should probably add some more details about said magazine. I'm not sure if I would describe Monthly Action as regular exactly...as I tried to get across it doesn't exactly have a genre it sticks to. There is a sort of independent spirit to its publishing philosophy. When I said "men's magazine" all that means is it's just demographically aimed towards males, and has some racier material than say a juvenile publication. I can't say anything on actual circulation numbers unfortunately, but I don't think it's one of the most popular magazines in that demographic. Still it's not a niche dedicated publication like your BL, gay manga magazines. Monthly Action also has only been around for about 4 years. Tagame searched for awhile for a home to tell a story like My Brother's Husband. Off the top of my head some of the popular titles in the West that have also graced Monthly Action's pages at one time or another would be dramas like Ichigo Takana's Orange, comedies like Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, and a bit more niche GL like Hana and Hina for example. Like I said originally its line up is varied. |

I'm glad this is coming out here. I'd also like to get some more of the non-fiction/semi-autobiographical "essay manga" by GBLTQ authors in English; we have/are getting a couple (literally two) by lesbian authors, but there are many other letters of the alphabet should any brave US publisher like to step up to the bar...
Just to reiterate, as a couple of people have said, this series is plain and simple seinen, not BL or gei comi (please don't call gei comi bara, Japanese gay men find the term very offensive! Tagame himself has discussed this in several interviews). (And for that matter BL authors are offended if you call their stuff yaoi...)
No, it's written by a gay man whose writing normally falls into the "brutal and sadistic hardcore BDSM porn" category. I mean, he has written some "racy romance", but it's hardly what he's known for.... Which is why I was so surprised when he announced a project like this. It shows how wide a range he can cover. |

More down-to-earth series like this don't seem to do well in anime form. Like even though the Princess Jellyfish manga won a Kodansha award for best shojo, the anime still bombed. If it gets an adaptation, I think they'll opt for the live-action drama approach. Last edited by 1dbad on Fri May 19, 2017 1:54 am; edited 2 times in total |

How about we cut it with the veiled homophobic insults. You don't have to like the material, or culture, but any kind of intolerance of that nature will not be tolerated here at ANN. Period.

Are there sites in Japan like ANN or AVclub or rottentomatoes, that post critic reviews? I was just wondering if when you called Princess Jellyfish critically acclaimed, you meant in Japan, or like, western fans liked it. |

I was referring to Japan, and how the series got nominated for some awards there. But that's not the same thing as critical acclaim, so I've fixed my original comment. That's what I get for writing my comment in a hurry. |
