All these manga artists realize what they have to go through to achieve their dreams and all of them are more than willing to do whatever it takes. How many of us actually achieve our dream jobs? Some, but most don't. Them being mangaka is like how I wanted to be a baseball player growing up. If I made to the minor leagues I would have done whatever it takes. If I made it to the major leagues then more so. These manga artists are the same. They don't want to settle to be in a magazine, but to have a massive hit. If they manage that accomplishment then they will do whatever to keep it.

It's really unfortunate, though. Even my favorite manga in the world, I would happily choose to cut the release schedule in half in exchange for the artist's health and happiness. And this way we lose the voices of people who just can't function on a schedule like that or are healthily unwilling to do it to themselves.
But I don't know how to give that kind of feedback from the consumer end. |

I imagine these 5am-to-2am schedules are why so many manga take hiatuses because of the author's health.

Justin could have mentioned how quickly most manga burn out, as careers that last over a decade are rare. Looking at what a salaryman makes and how much they need to work also shows that the comic slaves have it as rough as many others.
The compare: Famous Spawn and New52 Batman mega-artist Greg Capullo said on a Kevin Smith podcast that he works 55 hours a week (mostly from home) and he is one of the few who can drawn (nearly) 12 issues a year. Can someone give me a link to the list of mangaka that became millionaires due to their work. It´s not a long list... |

Worse yet I imagine there are selfish readers out there who don't care if the mangaka's health starts deteriorating in the process, as long as they get their volume fix. |

Only 3 hours of sleep a night?? Wow, I didn't think it was even physically possible for a human being to survive on so little for any length of time. I mean, it's barely 1 x sleep cycle ,,,

And then you have Hiro Mashima who draws so fast he sleeps 7 hours the day and periodically makes 2 chapters per week just because he can.
Is actually impressive, how his art doesn't go down. Most Mangakas stop drawing backgrounds *cough*kubo*cough* with time. |

And then you have workaholic authors like Tokyo Ghoul's who drew a 200 page draft for the anime, drew the ending cards of each episode for the second season of the anime, wrote 500 page script for a video game, drew illustrations for 2016's calendar for each days, drew a Hisoka side story for HunterxHunter, revised the script for the live action movie, redrew the first chapter of his manga for another magazine all while working on a weekly manga. Honestly puts authors like Kentaro Muira and Togashi to shame with their horrible work ethics.

check wikipedia's best selling manga, at 1usd per volume of royalties only the ones that sell over a million manga volumes are millonaire, since the 100 usd they get per page at 30 pages per month are non capitalizable living expenses . |

Takao Saito is 80 years old, he's older than Miyazaki, and is still working on Golgo 13. So these youngsters should not be being burnt out.

I'll never get tired of this ridiculous narrative some people have made for themselves.
Everyone's bodies aren't created equally.

Well sure if you disregard the fact that Ishida is likely younger and has been doing this stuff for less time than Togashi and Miura. That and a lot of that stuff Ishida did in between doing his manga was likely voluntary. |

Imagine if mangaka worked like the Greeks, Italians and Spaniards do. Even lazy scanlators would've caught up by now.

I actually organized an interview with an editor for Carlsen (they have the German Jump license) who strictly work in the comics dependent, so not manga. She belatedly said that there is no German comic creator scene. She is correct there, the famous ones can be counted on 1 to 2 hand. She also said that the artist she work with have to have another job, to make money for the next comic project. Harsh stuff but i read enough similar horror tales for Japanese creators.
On the 26 mil. Oda apparently makes a year. DC´s 4 CW shows made the company a profit of 1 billion in 2016 alone. I let the numbers speak for themselves. Oda is severely underpaid. End of story. I lastly once lived on about 5 hours of sleep during the work week, or less, as i went though my basic training. Only for 3 months but still. It gave me my first gray hair (at age 20...) and even messed with my brain. I had half of Friday and the whole weekend off though. The average mangaka doesn´t. |
