YES! They have Urashima Tarou! Every video on Youtube was the Urashima Tarou from 1931. To celebrate Anime's 100th anniversary I had watched one anime from every year I had not seen an anime from. I was not able to find anything from 1918-1923, 1951,1953, and 1955. Now that I'll be able to check off 1918! Just 8 years to go, but I don't think anything from 1919-1923 has survived. Thanks Japan! How'd you know it was my birthday?

If one can find that 2-min. 1917 short (un-subbed) that thumbnail represents, that's where a fansub can be legally (at least if you were making it in Japan because I don't know how USA covers that currently). The director died over 70 years ago and Japanese copyright ends 50- or 70 years (depending on the Japanese statute) after a creator dies.

It is perhaps not so much a question of survival, but of having been produced in the first place. While an anime was made in 1919 (for which we don't have a release date, but a quite detailed description of content since last year), there is no information that any anime was made at all in 1920, 1921, or 1922. However, there might have been animated scenes, presumably very brief, for live-action films, most of which likely haven't survived.

Unfortunately, I got the error message "No compatible source was found for this media" when I tried to watch them. (I'm using Firefox on a Mac.)
