Jerry, you better pay for everyone's funeral expenses when this is over. Then again, you're Russia, so...

To their credit, they probably didn't know it would be garbage until it was already too late.

The only way to justify the time it will take dub this disaster would be of they turned it into a self-aware comedy similar to Ghost Stories.

Great!
Now everyone will be able to focus on this show's quality™ sakuga without being distracted by the subtitles!

This feels like one of those "we didn't even look at what we licensed, lol" things.
Granted, it is also possible it was part of a package deal or a "don't even dream of license X unless you also take this" deal. But that wouldn't explain why they are burning money to dub this travesty. They can't seriously expect to make back that cash.
edit - Were that industry insider confessions article series still running, a "this is why we license trash" story would've made a great addition...

It's hard to hate something so wonderfully, so fascinatingly terrible. It's the kind of incompetent, glorious spectacle that really only comes once a year.
They really can't fail on the dub front. They could toot farts the entire thing and it'd not lower the show's quality one bit.

I do think HandShakers probably gets a little more hate than it deserves but I will agree it's still not a very good series for Funimation to waste time and money on dubbing. Whatever I may think the critics are still largely savaging this show, the Crunchyroll Average is probably 2.5 stars anyway so really Funimation should cut their losses and go sub only.
Contrast, I'm looking forward to Funimation's release of The Mystic Archives of Dantalian in a month and that doesn't have a dub at all. Funimaton stay consistent, keep to your mission of dubbing all shows or follow the Sentai model of selective dubbing.

Just when I thought they couldn't do any worse than dubbing Endride here we are with them dubbing Hand Shakers. I don't think anyone would have blamed them for pulling out dubbing this, however, when you use this show as one of the three main attractions for the season it's probably very difficult to pull out.

At least they can give the newbies a practice show to work on, it is better than putting them in roles for bigger shows.

Yes, but they're sub-only catalog is still under 20 anime, right? Plus, they're now dubbing all their shows thanks to the Crunchyroll deal.

Jerry Jewel directing and Monica Rial writing the script? That's much more than this show deserves to be honest.
