Just a question, are the Japanese/English dialogues in Shimoneta censored or uncensored?

The Japanese and English versions I came across did have censored dialogues.

I haven't watched it in a little but there's uncensored cursing and the only censored stuff is part of the joke.

That's kinda a meta commentary in and of itself.

I ask for it because I got to watch a raw uncensored version of it once, I think it was from the first JP BD volume (it was the first episode), even during the dirty punchline. It was a long time ago, so I don't remember well.

I think the real question should be, is the western version (english and japanese) censored or edited for content from the Japanese release and TV.

Hm? The English dialogue is uncensored. I don't have the set to check the Japanese dialogue and FUNimation's stream still uses the simulcast version when watching in Japanese.

For the most part. Some visuals remain censored for whatever reason (mostly stuff that is depicted as the real thing rather than a lookalike), but most of the visual censors have been removed. 100% of the fluids are shown in full glory. However, as I mentioned, I don't have the set to see if the Japanese audio is uncensored.

A stupid, "racy, dumb comedy...you need to shake off the doldrums" is how I find many people describing Shimoneta, and that's unfortunate because I find that the creators of Shimoneta make some pretty interesting and smart choices when it comes to the look of the show and the story.
In terms of character design, some people have pointed out that the design of each outfit fits each character very well. For example, Blue Snow's outfit is but a clean pair of white panties for a mask, and a clean white sheet that covers an otherwise nude body. It's not really meant to look lewd because her goal leans towards education rather than sexual deviancy. Now compare that to White Peak. Some others have also pointed out that each character wears a different style of collar that's in line with who they are. These are details that are easily missed.
What I personally enjoyed most about Shimoneta was that the sources of conflict felt meaningful. The creator(s) was smart and wanted to convey something more...Shimoneta is about enacting social change, which is very relevant to the current state of our world. They chose to explore conflicts such as: what happens when people who don't really care about a cause join a social movement? What happens when someone who doesn't understand a cause joins a social movement? How do people perceive a vague message sent by a social movement or organization? What happens when a vague message is co-opted by another group with their own agendas? How does one respond, and what are the consequences? These are all important issues faced, not just by social movements/organizations, but by the society with which they interact. The people who made Shimoneta could've taken the lazy route and turned the show into a standard rom-com focused on relationship troubles among a group of peers. They didn't do that. They made a show focused on the challenges of social change. That's some smart decision making. But you have to look past the raunchy superficial content to see it.
It's all too easy to look at a show like, Shimoneta, and call it a "dumb comedy" because there's still a lot of stigma surrounding sexuality in our society. It's a very poorly discussed topic despite its importance to the human species, yet distracting enough to draw our attention away from other important matters. It's the elephant in the room that's so big, we don't notice the giraffe standing behind it.

So you are saying that the visuals in the western release have been censored/edited for content?

Just putting this out there since it's related but does the way we feel about situations that happen in anime really have to be the same as the way we feel about those same situations in real life? I see a lot of explanations of what is or isn't ok to show in anime and the new commentary seems to be, it's ok to show sexual things if all characters involved are obviously ok with it, or if it's played out for drama. AKA we shouldn't laugh at sexual assault even if it's played to be a joke. And I didn't think this show was that funny anyways so this is playing devil's advocate. But I find that argument like saying the Three Stooges are awful because we are laughing at people who would be getting concussions. Or Home Alone movies are awful because we are laughing burgalers who would be dieing. I'm not saying people have to find certain things funny but when I specifically see reviews pointing out that such and such is not ok in real life therefore I find it not ok in anime I don't see the point. Like say you don't like seeing those things, if that's the case, it doesn't need to be justified.

Well, not edited, since it was already there. Very few of the censors from the original broadcast remain. I haven't re-watched the whole series, but the last episode has a few. For example, one of the statues in the hidden treasure trove in the last episode depicts two people having sex. That still has the censor. Same with a few realistic (I guess) phallic statues...
According to people who have seen the Japanese BDs, the content is the same between Japan and North America.
So, no, it's not 100% perfectly uncensored. If anything looks like actual genitalia, it'll be censored. Because, Japan.

The ones linked to from the article are Blu-ray only.
Based on the listings at Amazon, it appears at present you would still have to go with the part 1 & 2 boxsets to get a disc combo.

in other words, this released version is 100% censored. my only guess is that funi didn't have the license to release the uncensored version.
Quote: | The series' satirical edge is pretty obvious for anyone who follows otaku culture: The 2010 revision of the Tokyo Metropolitan Ordinance Regarding the Healthy Development of Youths caused quite a stir back in the day, and SHIMONETA is clearly reacting to a Japan whose future could contain even more absurd levels of government oversight in regards to racy material and behavior. |
Not quite. PM Abe Shinzo and his liberal gov't was able to get one of their "big brother"/anti-otaku laws in the books, though it wasnt as extreme as back in 2010. but it was damning enough that even negima/love hina's ken akamastu took notice since he's the head of that country's manga/writer union. at least that is what was stated when he appeared in that CNN news article on the law they pass to have any type of nudity fanservice classified as porn. that law they passed back in around 2013-2014 i believe cause some some authors in a massive tizzy fit. some even decided to cancel some of their current works cause of it. so while shimoneta is basically a shot at the current govt who is clearly anti otaku and pulled that BS in 2010, its also a warning for the current generation of fans. dont be surprised if somehow 10 years from now and that same govt is in power, that they try to pass some kind of censorship law similar to in the series.
