Eh, when I hear a series is going to be animated by Madhouse, Kyoani, or P.A. Works, my expectations jump pretty high; I think most will agree.
Konosuba's art style was fine but the character animation was so cheap and god-awful, I could not watch it. Even if it was meant to "be on purpose", like its fans defend, it was distracting and I hated looking at it.

I sort of like Konosuba's sloppy animation. It fits the show's lighthearted nature. I don't like really unique or weird looking art styles like Kemonozume or Ping Pong.

There are other light-hearted shows that do fine without the derp faces. It feels more like either "We didn't have enough money" or "We just didn't care enough".
But yeah, I wouldn't touch Ping Pong with a ten-foot pole. Ew. |

Yeah, that's the thing missed by the questioner... The current controversy isn't about the art style, but about the low quality of the character animation (and then on top of that, veering off model every third cut). |

I think that part of "a studio has X look" is subjective, because in the case of adaptations, the character designer has to refine the source´s designs for animation. With a character designer working for adaptations and original series, you don´t have a way to say that he/she has a personal style. The same happens with the studio because they have different character designers and art directors

Then there's Kyoani's work on this season's Mrs Kobyashi's Dragon Maid, they've hewed pretty close to the managaka's original work for most of the character designs except for Touhru the Dragon Maid herself. There they went with a somewhat more traditional Kyoani type look. I find it jarring, TBH.

My problem with Konosuba goes beyond its character design (seriously, look up the original LN illustration, and compare it to the anime).
My main problem is that Every. Single. Frame. of the show that isn't a Megumin EXPLOOOOSION is so lazily made that it practically screams "We don't care about any of this and we just want to cash in on the source's popularity". |

Loved this Answerman! Often when a series is announced as a TV anime I'll look at who's set to animate it, the director, character designer and/or original illustrator (for a manga/LN/game adaptation). When it's something that's shown consistent visually-impressive shows in the way BONES, KyoAni, or P.A. Works has, my excitement is certainly raised.
That said, it also then depends on what genre or plot is being brought to the table (Even the most gorgeous sakuga can't keep me engaged in a garbage story). |

Well, yeah. I don't think it has good animation, but there's movement. I guess I prefer that over consistent character models but static animation. I don't notice the off model characters that much anyway. It's all arbitrary for me though. Sometimes I might prefer it the other way around. I haven't watched the 2nd season yet though and I've seen people say it's worse than 1st season. |

Without a doubt my favorite Anime studios art style is Studio Trigger they are just so unique and everything the make is distinctly their own.

Unless I've seen specific discussion about it, I rarely know who is animating a show before watching it. There are quite definite "house styles", although I was thrown by Izetta which I was sure was from A-1.

Anyone else remember how Shaft used to animate round looking cats into the background EVERYWHERE in the mid 2000's. Shows like Moon Phase and Pani Poni Dash?

Konosuba artstyle isn't bad at all but people that defended the show are being called as apologists and wanker, eventhough that most of us didn't call them out for anything. I am not surprised that the hate is trying to run its course here as well.

What about the original source material for adaptations? Does the style of the manga or visual novel not influence the design of the anime? I can't imagine studios deviate too far from the original work's appearance otherwise the manga's fans would have another reason to complain about the adaptation.
