The vast majority of the revenues for Spirited Away and your name. came from Japan, where the cumulative inflation rate in the entire 15 years from 2001 (Spirited Away) to 2016 (your name.) was only 1.45%. By comparison, the United States' cumulative rate during those 15 years was 35.49%. http://fxtop.com/en/inflation-calculator.php?A=100&C1=JPY&INDICE=JPCPI2010&DD1=20&MM1=07&YYYY1=2001&DD2=03&MM2=07&YYYY2=2016&btnOK=Compute+actual+value During several years from 2001 to 2016, Japan actually experienced negative inflation -- deflation.
Box Office Mojo only has an inflation-adjusted chart for the U.S. box office, because as demonstrated with Japan, other countries have different rates of inflation or even deflation. This is the inflation-adjusted chart for the United States only: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm |

It's interesting to see a non hayao Miyazaki esque anime do so well world wide.
Basically, it looks more like what people think of as anime then Miyazaki, yet it's doing so well. I can see anime as a whole become more mainstream if it does this well in the rest of the territories it opens in. Which I'm all for. |

A large part of that is due to the Chinese market expanding. It has grown tenfold since 2001. |

^Exactly. I'd be very interested to see how much Spirited Away made in China, if it was even released.

Actually this is completely wrong. This as well as the source they are using are getting their box office figures from Box Office Mojo and that site has highly inaccurate figures because of the way they convert the overseas grosses.
Just take a look at this http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=intl&country=JP&id=yourname.htm By November 6 it had grossed $174 million in Japan and yet despite making millions more over the next few weeks by November 27 it had made...$172 million. That's because they take the total gross each week and convert it rather than stacking it on which causes these problems. In truth the movie has actually made $331 million worldwide and surpassed Spirited Away ages ago. http://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Kimi-no-na-wa-(Japan)#tab=summary |

The Numbers website has its own issues. The Numbers listed the film at US$284.8 million on January 13 -- meaning it increased by US$46.8 million in only 4 days, even though only two countries (Australia, South Korea) and "Rest of the World" are listed as updated in those days, and the updates don't add up to that number. Bing's January 13 cache of The Numbers: http://cc.bingj.com/cache.aspx?q=http%3a%2f%2fwww.the-numbers.com%2fmovie%2fKimi-no-na-wa-(Japan)%23tab%3dsummary+&d=4861307610275906&mkt=ja-JP&setlang=en-US&w=-CK-ZDZoNrSiqs6jjkd9q1iuXyLc3apo#tab=summary In any case, The Numbers listed your name. as surpassing Spirited Away in this past week -- just as the ANN article says -- and not ages ago. |

All these box office sites have issues however The Numbers at least has the most accurate gross.
They had Your Name as grossing $276 million over a month ago on December 14 which surpassed Spirited Away's $275 million so it wasn't within the last week. |

When I think about Makoto Shinkai, the only thing that comes to mind is "poor bastard". Next time he pitches any movie project, the investors will want "another blockbuster" and chances are his next film will not be as successful, so even if any further films make a profit, investors will be disappointed, this kind of success can lead a man to suicide, google George "not christopher" Reeves for such an example.

I thought this too at first, but then I remembered that he's associated with Comix Wave films which is a small independent animation film studio. He's thus far been able to make films that he wants and as long as he doesn't sell himself or studio to a big corporate entity, he should still have a significant amount of independence without worrying about the profit margins.. |

Can salty comments like yours die already? I feel like I've seen this same comment from you like five times at this point. Why in the world would you want such an unparalleled success for the anime industry to stop making money? This can only be a good thing for the industry as a whole. It might actually bring more well-earned attention to the medium as a whole. The logic of mentalities such as yours always escapes me. |
