A good day to be a Leijiverse fan. So far, the Leijiverse manga serial Queen Emeraldas still has its American-published English edition running with tankoubon 1 in English print so far (if not mistaken). Here's hoping for more Leijiverse manga getting English editions published for North American distribution in the future. In the meantime, French edition copies of tankoubons 1 and 2 of Captain Harlock: Dimensional Voyage (French edition title: Capitaine Albator: Dimension Voyage) are still being distributed in the Quebec province of Canada as we speak.

Always nice to see more Matsumoto stuff coming out in English. I haven't gotten around to reading the original Harlock manga yet, sort of wondering if I should just start with this one,...

I would have been more interested in the original, but I'll be giving this a chance. This plus Devilman G make me a little hopeful that maybe one of the Lupin III spin-offs has a chance of being licensed, too. Lupin III T by togekinoko would be a great fit should there be more new versions of classics.

There seems to be a small resurgence of interest in Leiji Matsumoto's works. I wonder if I can hope for the original Galaxy Express 999 manga to be licensed too.

Part of the problem with working with Matsumoto Leiji's stuff is that his rights are held by so many different companies. For example, Kodansha owns Queen Emeraldas, while VIZ owns the original Harlock, and now Seven Seas is doing this version. Yamato is owned by Akita Shoten ... it's all over the place.
So for companies it is often not a question of "What Leiji goodness do we want to publish?" but more "What can we get the rights to?" This series is essentially a "reimagining" of the original Harlock series, with an updated story and new art. As a fan of the original, this is really good. I am loving it, and it has all the Matsumoto feel with some spectacular art. It's a perfect place to start--actually, the only place to start, as this is the first Captain Harlock series translated into English. |

Thank you for putting some of my concerns to rest about this. I am not always a fan of "reboots", but if you say that it is as good if not better than the original, I have no issue with starting here. |

Too bad it's not the original manga. I was hoping that Kodansha Comics would release the original Harlock manga and Space Battleship Yamato manga to the US.

As I said in my post, Kodansha doesn't have the rights to either of those. I'm sure (actually, I know) that Kodansha would LOVE to publish both of those. But they can't. Original Space Pirate Harlock is Shogakukan AKA Viz Media. Space Battleship Yamato is Akita Shoten. They don't have a dedicated US publisher, and several companies could bid on the license, although not Kodansha, as they exclusively publish Kodansha titles. Like everyone, I would love to see these titles published, even more so if they hired me to translate. But you have to realize how relationships work with publishing companies to knock on the right door. |

I am wondering Harlock was inspired by Cyborg 009 himself. Seven Seas has been on a licensing roll lately. Congrats to getting the license to a modern version of a manga classic.
