I know it's kinda obscure, but Texhnolyze HAS to be on this list. Some of these endings might as well be upbeat in comparison to that ending.

I was going to complain about the lack of Dunbine, but it ranked #23 on the full list. Looking at the rest of the list, I'm also glad that 3 people in Japan remember Gilgamesh and its mindf**k of an ending, and that 6 people remember that Orguss invented the so-called "Gainax ending" before Gainax even existed.
It ranked #48, tied with Gilgamesh. The full list can be found here. |

I think what surprises me most about this list is that it doesn't completely read like a popularity contest of the most recent anime series. I'm surprised there were enough Japanese people in their 20s and 30s familiar with some of these shows to rank them so highly.

Frankly surprised that Shin Seiki Den Mars, but at the same time seeing it on the list did job my memory enough to remember that it did have a pretty sad ending for Mars himself:
spoiler[He saves the entire Earth from destruction by his own alien race, yet the people he just saved tell him to get off & as far away from their planet, simply because he's the same race as the aliens he just fought off. Not just that, but during the entire final battle Mars had the city he was surrogate living in trying to lynch him for the same reason, so he had to get past them without killing any innocent civilians. Essentially, Mars does the right thing, but then is told to **** off as his thanks. He couldn't even get to be with the girl that was falling for him.] Looking at some of the other titles listed, I'd say that this is honestly a pretty nicely compiled list. 5 CM/2 at #30. expected higher but with only 500 people voting i guess it shouldn't be surprised.

Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, FMA 2003, and Fate/Zero are all bittersweet at worst, and She, The Ultimate Weapon, is just hilariously edgy.

Fate/Zero is a prequel, so calling it a miserable ending is kind of like saying you hate how the Star Wars movies end with Padme dying and Anakin becoming Darth Vader.

School Days in on the list? I've always seen the ending as a rather dark comedy, i.e. the dude has it coming.

That was my reaction too. Usually I see these poll articles, and expect it to be "Stuff from the last 3 or 4 years, plus maybe Eva or Gundam or something Ghibli, depending on the topic." The choices here are genuinely interesting. |

Nice to see Farewell Yamato on there, too bad audiences couldn't take that kind of ending so they just retconned it with the second season.

Cowboy Bebop did have a tragic ending and although it was spectacular I do wish that it would have ended differently.

So, for people who've literally had the intestinal fortitude to sit through all of it, does this mean Violence Jack has a happy ending?

31 sociopaths think a mass murderer getting his comeupance is a miserable ending. Admittedly everything after spoiler[L dying] was miserable to sit through, but I don't think that's what the poll is getting at.

You're forgetting that spoiler[in the final arc Light's father died, and also how hurt and disgusted those who trusted Light were upon finding out the truth. Light's death wasn't tragic but most of what the rest of the investigative team goes through trying to finally find Kira was tragic.] |
