Interesting...I might have to place an order. Not a bad price for it, either. Cool

This reminded me of when Encore Action used to show anime all the time. I never actually watched this, but I remember it being listed all the time. And I watched almost all of Blue Seed there, among other random stuff that I can't remember what they were called.

Yea, they showed anime such as Black Magic, Appleseed, Battle Arena Toshinden, Tekken, Blue Seed, Macross, Tekkaman Blade 2, Birdy the Mighty, Battle Angel Alita, Vampire Hunter D, Hellsing, and I think a few others.

Anyway, yea, this series was pretty good when I first watched it, some time when I was like 10 or something, but I don't remember all too much about it, other than the robots and whatnot. I personally preffered Appleseed over this one, but it's good to see something I've actually seen before in Buried Treasure :X

Yaaay, I love this old OAV!! I was probably only around 13 years old when I saw it, but the fast-paced action and fun attitude really drew me in (and of course, I was already a fan of Tank Police). Random stupid story- around the time I was in to this OAV, I found a pretty cool t-shirt of it, I think from Right Stuf. I ordered it and when it finally came, I hung it up in my bedroom. Little did I know, when I turned off the lights THE SHIRT WAS GLOW-IN-THE-DARK!! I think I also accidently wore it to a photography class and screwed up some people's work in the dark room with it.. Anime hyper But yes, I still have a glow-in-the-dark Black Magic shirt 'til this day.

While I can easily understand how you made the error, Tom Charles does not play Richard Leeky. It's actually actor Gary Dubin.

Really? Do you have a source for this? It was something of a guess, since the credits don't match actors to roles, and the encyclopedia didn't have Richard Leeky as a character.

I haven't seen that anime in years (okay, since I was in Junior High in Encore) but I thought it was pretty cool. Maybe I'll pick it up if I see in it Best Buy. :3

Daemonblue: Do you know if Birdy the Mighty was released in DVD yet?

Well, if you are in the Toronto area, get thyself to the bloor/bathurst area. I was there yesterday and I saw it somewhere there. It was either at the new, blue ABC, or somewhere in Sonic Boom down the street. I can't remember whether it was on VHS or DVD, buy I know I saw it.

I already have it, bought for $5 at Sonic Boom earlier this year. It's great if you like action, but there's not much in the way of character development or background. I think it would have made a neat little series, though.

-sigh- Alas, it's too far a drive. I'll see how my funds for the rest of the month are and maybe I'll get a copy from the website posted elsewhere on this thread (forgot the name of the distributor).

Saw this one a long time ago, and it's a great ride. When they're caught in the elevator with the robot you can't help white-knuckling your seat.

I saw this years ago on vhs but never knew what it was. It was one of the shows my friend showed me when he got me into anime. I'll have to see if I can get a copy myself as from what I can remember it was a fun show and I've always been partial to the old 80's and 90's OVA's. My gf can't stand them but I eat em up hehe.

This was the very first anime OAV I've seen on my own, about 5 years ago. I found the tape in the OSU university library.

It's decent enough though not exacly great. Still, a nice 80s nostalgia piece.

Oh man the memories, the memories!!

This was another feature I watched back in HS and I utterly fell in love with it. Yeah, you can't help but catch those 'Terminator' takes. Hell, you might find a bit of 'Aliens' in there too even though that movie wasn't even out during the time. Go fig. I've been a 'Shirow' fan for many years and he had what I wanted in tough female characters.

This film was great and despite it's age it still holds up. I never grow tired of popping this one in and watching it. It's part of my collective HS nostalgia. When I first saw it I was awed. Years later, you figure that if you watch it now, you'd have a different view. Sort of like, "This movie is crap! What did I see in this back then?" Nope, still just as entertaining as ever. I practically own the feature on LD and DVD. But that's only because at the time there was no release for it.

It just has just the right amount of story and action as well as silly humor found in a 'Shirow' story. It's amazing that a guy that spends hours talking about tech, worldly events, politics, utopias, etc... could have a sense of humor. Everything just fits together so well. For a "one shot" movie they did a good job. Never thought much about the perspective issue. Guess I never caught it. Shame on me and I was an art student too. Sad But I always tried to pay attention to those little details that stand out. Like the whole fight in the forest. Now that was awesome. Or the part where 'M-66' robot scans the wire trap to grasp the situation. Or the fact that no matter how light the robot looks, the soldiers can't kick it's legs out from under it. Which establishes weight. Especially on the broken stairs. Oh and there was the while deal where the soldier kicked the barrier device across the room. It slides across the floor toward the M-66 robot and causes it to be thrown into a wall by the barrier. It baffled me that as slow as that robot would be slow at times but when it wanted to catch you it could. but the whole elevator deal really worked. In fact it made that last segment all the more exciting. And it was all done by hand. No CGI back then. Which often spurred those geek oriented arguments on how "Japanese" animation was better than domestic animation. You remember those. Razz

I remember reading in an issue of 'Black Magic' (published by the now defunct 'Studio Proteus' - 'Dark Horse's other label), they interviewed 'Shirow' on 'Black 'Magic M-66'. From his comments he was very pleased with how the OVA turned out. He points out the robots used in the original story. Which were the MA-77s, a type of 4-armed robot and the MA-66 which are 2 armed. His original idea was to try and incorporate this into project since animation had evolved enough to try more things. Unfortunately they felt that trying to animate more limbs would be too complicated to do. So they had to scratch that idea. Thus using the MA-66 models instead to become the M-66 in a newly planned out story. The full terms written on the capsules in 'Black Magic M-66' were known as the M-66 F5 (the agile one) and M-66 F6 for our main attacker.

I have to admit it would been interesting to see that done. Again since I was only familiar with the anime I had never known the manga was that much different than the OVA. But after reading 'Appleseed' I could see where a lot of his early ideas came from.

The original 'Black Magic' manga borrows a great deal from 'Greek' mythos. Which is pretty much the foundation for 'Appleseed' and some of 'GITS'. According to the first 'Intron Depot', it's mentioned that the characters from 'Black Magic' would become the prototypes for characters in 'Appleseed'. 'Duna Typhon' = Deunan Knute (with a little Kusanagi thrown in), 'Yasha = Hitomi and the robot called '
'Hecatonchires' (which looks like Briares) would become 'Briareos Hecatonchires'. Oh there's monkey named 'Goku'. I guess he would later become 'Daisuke Aramaki'.

I was always a fan of 'Greek' mythos and 'Shirow' was the first I'd come across that used it well. Two really great combinations. It's like 'Reeses Peanut Butter Cups'. Very Happy

Great review!
