I have came across this subject a few times while clicking through these forums, and man some people can really read fast! What I wanted to know is, how long does it take you to finish one volume? Also what's your record time for finishing one manga?

Me? I usually take about 45 minutes to and hour to read a full volume, sometimes even longer on more wordy series (Death Note, Negima). My record time was about 20 minutes on Bleach volume 20!

Besides the fact that I'm a slow reader, it takes me a long time to read manga because not only am I reading it, I'm also studying the art very closely. Well, not very closely. I also like to take the time to think about the story, characters, etc., at certain points before I move on. Not to mention, when I put something down, it may or may not be a while before I pick it up again.

Anyway, I would say that my record time is definitely above an hour. Sometimes I take days to read manga, but when you add up all the minutes, it probably doesn't go over two hours. So, my range is within one and two hours. I guess it's possible for me to read a single volume in 30 minutes. I just haven't. Razz

I'd definitely say I average an hour per volume, maybe more depending on the series. I can go faster if I'm re-reading a series but even then, half an hour is about the fastest.

That depends largely on what kind of manga I'm reading and how motivated I am when I'm reading it, but usually a manga with little text makes for a quicker read. If I'm in the process of re-reading older series or just looking for certain details I guess I could rush trough a book in a few minutes.

A volume of Blame! doesn't take very long as the dialogue and inner monologues are minimal and the books about the little dinosaur Gon are without any text whatsoever. I could probably "read" one volume in a pretty short time, but as previous poster said; looking at the drawings is a major factor in reading manga and I could use hours just looking at the illustrations in these two series as they're both splendid.

Average: 15-20 minutes
Dialogue-rich or 4-coma: 30-40 minutes
Minimal dialogue: ~10 minutes
Record: ~7 minutes for a volume of Peach Girl

An interesting fact is that 4-coma takes much longer than regular titles, even at a fewer pages per volume. Why? I'd say it's because of the number of panels. Regular manga has 3-7 panels per page for a total of ~200 pages; many of which have no dialogue, and in some dramatic moments there are panning pages (two pages for one scene). In 4-coma (such as Lucky Star and ATASHIn'CHI, with less than 150 pages per volume), however, you have 8-12 panels with full dialogue per page, and each 4-panel strip contains an independent story, forcing your mind to "reset" 2-3 times per page, further slowing down the reading speed.

I've never actually counted how long it takes me to read a volume of manga, but I'm sure it takes me longer than most people because I like to look at the art for longer than just a glance. I could probably read faster, but I don't like to rush when I'm reading something.

Also, I rarely read a volume in one sitting, or even in one day. I usually finish a volume in two or three days. I'm not sure why, but I just don't like to read a whole volume at once. I'll even skip around and read different manga before I'm finished with a volume. However, if I'm reading a manga I find very interesting, sometimes I'll read an entire volume in one sitting because I just can't put the book down.

Hmm...usually 30-40 minutes, though it depends on the amount of dialogue, etc. It takes me about twice as long to read something in French, though.

Yeah, 4-komas take me longer to read as well. Strangely, though, Blame! takes me a while, mostly because I like to look at the artwork for a while, especially the architecture.

Generally it takes me 25-45 minutes to read one volume. Though it's around 30 minutes a majority of the time.

My record is a minute off of dormcat's coming in at 8 minutes. It was a volume of A.I. Love You. I usually take about 20 minutes to read a single volume. I've always been a fast reader myself so I can read pretty gingerly and still take everything in.

That being said I'm forcing myself to take longer now. I want to enjoy it more completely and I think I haven't except with certain series, like Oh My Goddess. I think I've approached them like a book and focus on the dialog. I take in the "scenery" as it were but not as much as I think I should. I think that's part of why I might have enjoyed anime more then manga over the years. Whether or not this changes I;m making myself take around 30 minutes now so beyond just reading I also scan the pages and really notice the pictures and backgrounds more now before turning pages. I try and make myself think of it as a still motion anime of sorts.

I more usually read full blown fantasy epics and those are notorious for being exceptionally long and very wordy in highly detailed condensed text. A manga tankoubon on the other hand is vastly less dense and usually uses pretty basic language (at least in what I read) trying to simulate human speech patterns.

I don't exactly time myself but I will note that around 15 minutes has passed for a normal volume. reading the extras and translation notes at the end of some manga can take another 5 or so minutes but I can't think of a manga that has taken me more than 25 minutes to finish. (I've read Kare Kano, Saikano, Negima, Stellvia, Alice 19th, Life, Gunslinger Girl and Doubt)

I will note that I read for rhythm, I will read quickly following the text and shifting from panel to panel if there is a lot of action or a conversation (as those tend to be rapidly evolving events) but more slowly evolving bits such as a romantic kiss, or soul searching moment are read more slowly. I don't tend to spend much time 'appreciating' the art, I take it at face value, see what I see as I read the panel and follow the events but I wont stop and investigate the nuance of a penstroke, or the quality of perspective, only what I pick up on at face value. Thus I don't; for example; care that Ken Akamatsu uses CG backgrounds, at face value they look great.

Probably thirty-forty minutes. It often feels longer, as I don't like to read it all in one go- I like to have something to go to and read. I often feel I read too fast, and sometimes slow myself down to look at the art and...well that's it actually.

Unless I'm super into a particular manga series, I don't rush through it at all. Usually it takes me a few days to completely read through a manga because I pick it up for a few minutes, put it down, go do some other things, come back to it.

A lot of times I have 4 or 5 mangas I need to read so I go back and forth between them over the span of a week or two weeks. I just spent $10-15 bucks on it and I just don't want to run right through it. For some reason, I don't feel the same with anime. Anime has more of a re-play value to me than mangas.

I actually hate reading normal books so that also might be why it takes me so long to get through a manga. I'm a visual and audio learner, so I sometimes have to read over things more than once to get it all. But I read a lot of series. Host Club and Hana-Kimi are the only mangas that I force myself not to finish the day I got it, but I definitely could!

I'm in the minority, along with a couple others here, who read manga ultra slow. On the average I take about 3 hours per manga volume. For wordy titles such as Negima I routinely take about 5 hours. I don't think this is a bad thing, though. I like to stare at all the pictures, especially the good ones. And I also like to reflect upon what is being said and what is going on. At the same time I can stare at the pictures some more. On the other hand, I almost never re-read a manga, so I guess you could say that all the time I spend is to make sure I see every nuance the first time around. With anime, I watch at the same pace as everyone else of course, but I tend to re-watch my favorite shows a huge number of times.

If I am reading a manga for free in the store, though, then I finish in about 8 minutes on average, and can probably still give a decent accounting of everything that happened in it.

I'd say it usually takes me about an hour per volume (In English, at least....reading it in Japanese probably takes me at least double the amount of time). I could read faster, but I like to absorb as much as possible of the story, dialogue, and art. I like to 'hear' the dialogue in my head as I'm reading it, not just gloss over the words and move on once I've got the general gist of what's being said. My husband, on the other hand, will read a volume in 10-15 minutes. I might read fast if I'm really anxious to see what'll happen next (I think I probably read the last volume of Death Note pretty fast Anime smile) but otherwise I prefer to take my time.
