The films which nearly traumatized me when I was younger were Robocop 2[which also coincidentally broke that unwritten rule...], Faces of Death 4 and Meet the Feebles.

It's almost embarassing to admit it, but Enemy Mine scared the HELL out of me.

I have to admit to liking the first Genocyber episode just a bit but, beyond that, the series was just too messed up for my tastes...especially the last episode where the poor blind pregnant girl gets killed along with all the little kids that she was with. Just way too messed up of a show. I hate it when things involve killing kids or innocents...to me it's really unnecessary to do things like that and Kouichi Ohata at times seems to revel in doing things like that. M.D. Geist part 1 was great. Part 2 was terrible and disgusting. The over-the-top violence is not an issue as long as it isn't against kids or women. Might sound a bit hypocritical of me but, I guess that just the way I feel about it. Anyway, yet another good article Justin. You take a look at a lot of things that most folks turn their noses up at and give them a good look over and a fair review. I applaud you for that. You give me hope that anime fandom isn't all just a bunch of snobs.

I don't think there's a problem with kids watching Grave of the Fireflies, but Kimera?! I have a problem with PEOPLE having to watch that! (Who did this to you!?)

You'd probably have just as much luck finding this one in a video rental store as anywhere, as it was quite widely-available (at least in my part of the country, anyway) in such places back in the late '90s/early 2000s. It's also not unusual to come across it at 'cons.
Justin's description intrigues me, as I clearly remember renting this one but have only a vague recollection of what it was about. May have to hunt it down again.
And my culprit for movies that disturbed me at an early age: Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the 1971 version starring Gene Wilder). Saw that one at a tender young age and couldn't watch it again until I was much older, as the Oompa-Loompas just totally creeped me out for some reason.

I went in the store and picked it up. All my dad saw was a cartoon and I think it may have been misrated at the time...when I think back on it.
Luckily it was a rental.

How is this a buried treasure? It's like the equivalent of saying Ninja Resurrection is a buried treasure. Epic failure.
And masterpiece like FMA? How many Anime have you seen again to be writing this article?
I'm not trying to be an asshole, but it seems more of you are beginning to sound like Anime noobs who don't know what a "buried treasure" is. Princess Nine is a buried treasure. Ruin Explorer is a buried treasure. Hell, Tetsujin 28 is a buried treasure. But to bring up Genocyber and call it that? "lol" is all I have to say. And don't give me your bull crap about "it's my opinion". There are things which are obvious and does not fit the integrity of subjectivity.

I think he meant that the screen writer would eventually write something good like FMA (if, of course, you consider it to be a masterpiece which is a whole 'nother subject).
And you did mention stuff like Tetsujin 28, but I'm really waiting for the Buried Treasure article on Giant Robo. Ya hear that, Justin?
As far as Genocyber goes, I've heard the name plenty of times but never seen it. As terrible as some of it sounds, it actually has me interested in a sort of morbidly curious way.

And that justify it as being a buried treasure? It's senseless, grotesque violence with no plot, no character developments, no anything to be frank. It's a piece of garbage like Tekkan: The Movie and Wicked City. Granted, Genocyber is behind the scenes and not too many know about it. But wow... to hear it be called something like that is offensive. Can I call Gundoh Musashi a buried treasure just because better Anime is made in the future from the same director?
*waits for ANN fanboys to naively go on the defense having never seen it*
ps. I wouldn't be posting if a few of my friends didn't link me to something this stupid and nonsensical, but I don't object like this unless I honestly think it's truly garbage.

Strange... never could make it through Genocyber... but I still like the original M.D. Geist.... probably for similar reasons Justin laid out in this piece.

Kefka: People consider Elfen Lied and Gantz to be "treasures", and they probably have as much torture porn as Genocyber.

Given that your chosen form of "wit" is tired internet catchphrases and memes, I'd say you're not really building yourself up as a paragon of reasonable logic, rather some obnoxious douche who thinks he's in a place to dictate what's right and what's wrong and clearly did not really even read the column before complaining about it.

The easiest, most cost-effective way of getting a copy of Genocyber is to buy the Mecha Masters box set, which contains some of Koichi Ohata's other "great" works. Not a bad deal at around $20 if you're looking to pad your collection.

No, there is a difference between those. Elfen Lied had a story behind the bloody violence as well as character development, yet not enough to warrant a "buried treasure tag" as everyone is familiarized with it, obviously since it's pretty popular. Gantz just blows as much as Gilgamesh. You don't even justify it being a "buried treasure" and only say that because it's old. What is the treasure behind Genocyber?
Don't confuse a "buried treasure" with something that just isn't known. And don't pass off Anime more recently such as Gantz and Elfen Lied as "buried treasure". You already sound like a noob with the Genocyber article. Don't dig your grave by mentioning recent things like Elfen Lied and Gantz.
