"Next week: While Ashura investigates the origins of the mysterious Divine Tree, Indra helps reinvigorate the bridge-robbing industry his father all but destroyed decades earlier."
I understand that he doesn't want to be saddled with the burden, but I'm surprised Ashura continued pushing for Indra to become the successor after the whole prison break fiasco. Shouldn't that have given him a general idea of how his brother would govern? I suppose it kind of mirrors Naruto's near-fanatical devotion to redeeming Sasuke.

Episode 466
That wasn't so bad. One thing that's kind of interesting is to see the old geniuses are cold fish trope used. I've always wondered why we treat super smart people as some sort of monsters who don't feel normal human emotions and lack empathy. Seems kind of counter-productive, from an evolutionary standpoint.
I'd also kind of thought that was a western anti-intellectual stance, of which we've been seeing a growing resurgence in the US, but looks like it's everywhere.

So... Hagoromo knew (or at least had a strong inkling) that these villages were suffering for decades and chose not to step in? I guess he was saving them for his sons, but how many people died while he was waiting for those two to come of age?
Kinda surprised that former-bridge-robber guy's firmly in Indra's camp. Totally had him pegged for an Ashura man.

I'd like to think that Hagoromo will pick Ashura sorely because he used the same bringing people together and gaining followers via manual labor intensive infrastructure projects shtick that he preferred himself.
I think believing Indra just abandoned them to misery and famine is a bit optimistic, counter intuitive though that statement seems. To me, either he killed them all or put them under mass genjustu like his grandmother and one of his reincarnations. I'm leaning more towards the latter, though I can see scenarios where the first would occur.

Episode 467
Hagoromo: Indra, welcome back. How'd it go?
Indra: Fine.
Hagoromo: Did ya fix the problem?
Indra: Yep.
Hagoromo: Well, alright then.
Hagoromo: Ashura, welcome back. How'd it go?
Ashura: Took a while, but fine.
Hagoromo: You look all grown up now. Who are all these people?
Ashura: My disciples.
Hagoromo: That's nice. So tell me everything you did to fix the problem.
Ashura: We dug a well, healed the sick, I taught everybody Ninshuu, burned down the Divine Tree, then brought half the village home with me.
Hagoromo: Sounds like fun. Ok, I'm ready to choose now.
I kept wondering why (other than because plot) Hagoromo never asked Indra for any details about what he did to solve the problem. Seems like that would've been pertinent information before deciding. It looked like even the toad got fed up with him not asking and finally spilled the beans.
I've already forgotten what Hagoromo told Naruto and Sasuke about how it went down, but I assume they survive, being ancestors and all (or did they just reincarnate into random unrelated people?). So I reckon the only girl we've met will end up marrying Ashura.

I find it was a mistake for Hagoromo to bestow Sasuke some of the Sage's power. Even as Indra's reincarnation, Sasuke had a lust for power. Sasuke might not know how to ever be genuinely strong.Asura was the right choice to be Hagoromo's heir.

Looks like Naruto's off this week. Pretty rare for the show to take two breaks in *relatively* rapid succession, but at this point, I only sort of care.

Quote: | For a series that emphasizes the importance of personal relationships, it's generally not very good at showing how these relationships are cultivated. |
I agree - and I think the fillers have actually done certain relationships more justice than the source material. For example, we're often told that Naruto is friends with his immediate peers, but he barely says two words to many of them in the manga. Only in the post-Sasuke Retrieval fillers do we see him having extended interactions and doing normal friend stuff with the rest of the Hidden Leaf 12.

Seriously, we are at a good enough place to resume to the canon episodes. They should go back for a few filler weeks after they defeat Kaguya. With the fillers, I do think we will reach over 700 TV episodes (more episodes than main manga chapters).

Good lord, what did I just see? The episode ended by returning to main story and the preview shows they don't just bring more fillers but also using a freakin' old timeline! Seriously, what does it take to end the anime properly?

To convince the shareholders and the production committee members, I guess.

When rating each episode I find I'm reluctant to give it a decent score even when it is decent, just because the whole filler stuff is so irritating. So I have to add half a point to counter my bias against the series when they finally do something pretty good.
Quote: | My primary gripe this week is the abruptness of Indra's crossing over. Sure, Black Zetsu's been manipulating him since childhood, but resorting to murder mere hours after Ashura was named his father's successor struck me as too hasty a turn. Seeing him at least attempt to work with Ashura before deciding to go postal would have made his turn a bit more believable. |
For me it would have been less believable if he'd spent some days or weeks stewing on the decision and it would have felt even more cold-blooded when he finally killed them. As it played out, it makes sense that he'd do it while still burning with anger at being denied and willing to do anything to show them all (in the midst of their celebration) they'd made the wrong choice.
Also, you have to remember he's had a year of twiddling his thumbs waiting for the kingdom to be handed over to him, time enough for him to become even more uncompromisingly certain of the superiority of might (when it's his) makes right. So in his view, whatever makes him mightier is right for the world, even if that means sacrificing his disciples.

It looks like they're now recycling filler episodes.

It's fairly apparent that they're going to stretch things out until the end of December. That's about 23 weeks away and they've got about 17 chapters left. If they do two chapters an episode, that's no more than 10 episodes. Maybe 15 if they stretch it. Needless to say, there's going to be a couple months of fillers to come.
