Sabat talked about this one himself once. His Armstrong voice is indeed the same deepness he uses for his Piccolo voice, but Armstrong's voice is smooth where his Piccolo voices has a gruffness to it. So while similar, they are indeed two very different voices, this is evident when he says a Piccolo line in Armstrong's voice.

It shouldn't have to be explained by the actor, it should be obvious to the listener... For it to even come up means others probably feel the same way. Oh well, it's not like he didn't sound good as Armstrong, I just don't think it's the unique voice that people think it is. I've heard nearly all of his Piccolo lines, it's not all yelling and screaming, he goes through a lot of tones in that voice which are almost exactly the same as the ones he uses as Armstrong.
But seriously, this is a One Piece topic, not a "dissect Sabat's vocal range" topic. I think we've derailed it enough.

I also have to say how amazing a singer Vic Mignogna is, he was the best choice for the opening.

Humans are creatures of habit. You obviously got used to the other version. You'll get used to this, or you'll stop watching.

10PM? "Kids" who can't understand should be in bed.

I thought the old voices were very dynamic (even Sanji). But, the worst of it was making Luffy female. i didn't even look at the new casting on ANN but man did that stick out. I thought that was a practice that died out a long time ago.

My notes say Erica Schroeder was Luffy for 4Kids.
Isn't that a gal?
And the original Japanese actress played Krillin as a kid as well as an adult & played Yajirobe in DBZ-Mayumi Tanaka- and yeah, she's a gal.
And in Japan Goku was played by a gal. Ed & Al-FMA are gals. Naruto's a gal. Get over it. It's fairly common for male leads in shonen anime to be played by gals--if you want guys played by guys, move over to shojo where we get a better percentage of guys voicing guys (or at least yaoi...) Some gals in Japan seem to voice guys far more than gals--I'm always surprized to run into Romi Paku playing a chick

No. As my husband would say, you need to get the peanut butter out of your ears. I think David Moo loves to be hated. Xellos was, at one time, the dub voice everyone pointed to when they said dubs suck. And then he does this.

No SoCal hispanic culture for you. Never heard of Zoro? Seen the movies with Antonio Banderas? THe old TV show? Zoro (The fox) has been around for a few decades. Deeper than I expected, but Kazuya Nakai & Hiroaki Hirata have somewhat similar deliveries-noticably deeper than the rest of the crew so it works. Hirata's a bit mushier/slurred-sounding to my ears.
Toneloak wrote: |

You liked the voice cracking? At least Sonny Strait sounds human. THe 4Kids version sounded so fake-like any time Usopp would reveal he was operating under cover & that was a fake voice.

I never liked that 4Kids made that deep voice for big Chopper. Go watch Pokemon. Pikachu is Chopper. One can always tell Ikue Ohtani because at some point (often lots of points) her voice cracks like that "Pikachu" tone. I don't recall Big Chopper that well, but I don't think she makes any major change when it's big or small, but I don't honestly remember.

Also, maybe it's the pauses between each line, but there is no chemistry between the actors. Maybe the studio and actors need too work out some of the details get the engine humming. After all this only the first episode and I see potential. And, Funi is good at what they do. |
Because god knows Eric Vale (Trunks) & Chris Sabat (Vegeta) never, ever worked together. ANd they never worked with Sonny Strait (Krillin).

I'll have to see if I can find a clip of the OP somewhere, then, because in my experience, Vic Mignogna + Good Singer =/= same sentence. My feelings about him aside.

OK, I watched it last night, and re-watched most of it earlier today. I gotta say, it's better in almost every regard; casting, performance, and above all scripting. That said, it's still kind of a shock to the system hearing the new voices; so it's going to take some getting used to. But I guess it won't be so bad seeing One Piece on TV. Some thoughts on the voices:
Luffy: sounds somewhat similar to the 4kids voice, but it's better performed.
Zoro: out of all the voices from 4kids his was the best, though that's not saying much, Chris could be a little lighter but it sounds great.
Nami: Luci fits perfectly.
Usopp: the biggest problem with the 4kids voice was it was too goofy and it was never shut off; FUNi has definitely fixed this.
Sanji: no congested Brooklyn accent; the best improvement, but that wasn't hard to do.
Chopper: I didn't hear much of Chopper in the 4kids version; but FUNi's seems to hit the mark alright.
Robin: No southern drawl, another vast improvement.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you, because I can definitely hear some Piccolo, don't forget about Kuwabara.

Judging from some Youtube videos, and the reactions at a certain fansub site; I'd say a lot of people are really liking the new voices.

Hello!
It may be harsh that he criticized every part of Toneloak's post but he was telling the truth about the how the Japanese One Piece has been dubbed to how 4Kids dubbed One Piece. The new Funimation dub of One Piece is going to be different than the 4Kids dub because the Funimation dub is staying much closer to the original Japanese One Piece. So it will be a change for those who have only seen the 4Kids dub. All I can say to those people keep watching because things are going to get very interesting with the upcoming arc.
I have seen all of the episodes, the movies, and the specials and mini specials of One Piece in Japanese and I will say that the Funimation dub is a great start for a new English One Piece. I am now looking forward to watching every week from now on because the Funimation dub is much more like getting to watch the Japanese One Piece.
As to why I only watched the Japanese One Piece over the 4Kids One Piece does not have anything to do with sub versus dub it has to do with the fact that the Japanese One Piece is the telling of the manga One Piece. 4Kids had the show but took out so much of the manga story that I just could not watch it. However Funimation is going to stay true to the original anime which is faithful to the original manga.
So I am happy with the new Funimation dub and I know that a lot of other One Piece fans are happy too.

I like how you completely misinterpreted what I said. To me at least there's an obvious difference between his Piccolo and Armstrong voices, as well as many of the other voices he is capable of reaching. I don't know if you're just quick to assume or are tone deaf, but I can hear differences. And his voices were explained by Sabat because he was asked a question about his range and he did a whole bunch of different voices, and not just Piccolo and Armstrong.
Anyways, the creator approves of the new voices, so anybody that doesn't like them is just being picky.

I can assure you that I'm not tone deaf, I can hear the differences. You said it yourself that they're the same deepness, the difference is that one's "smoother" and the other is "gruffer". That's like talking with an accent in your normal voice, it doesn't change your range, it just changes the way you act. You're right, there are obvious differences, but they're too subtle to be anything more than variations on the same voice.
Haven't we derailed this enough? It's not like I think Sabat is a horrible actor or anything, there are more popular actors out there with even less range than him as there are worse actors with better range. I just don't think his voice fits Zolo "IMO".

I enjoyed it muchly.
Opening and endings: Usually I care about the songs but I was so relieved to see the original animation that I didn't much notice the songs.
Of the voice talent:
Luffy - Subtle change in that while the pitch seemed in the same range, the delivery seemed more "mature" so I felt it was an improvement.
Nami - I didn't mind the previous VA and I don't mind the new one so it is an equal swap.
Sanji - Total and complete improvement.
Robin - Same as Sanji.
Zoro - It seemed a bit too low but that's a quibble and it'll grow on me.
Chopper - Same as Nami.
The real improvement though is in the script. I hated the stupid gags and dopey puns and overall stupidity of the 4Kids script so the new handling of the script, even if it is "reversioned" as Funi likes to call it, is such a relief. As someone upthread commented already, I laughed at the right places instead of groaning at the wrong ones.
And hearing that Ace will be voiced by Travis Willingham (FMA's Roy Mustang) makes my day!
Looking forward to more from this crew! If this is their premiere, I can only imagine what they'll be like once they've all settled in.

Okay here's my general impression of the One Piece new dub. Being a fan of the original Japanese version I can say I was a bit underwhelmed. The dub was not as "perfect" and it was promoted to be. Still, that's only because I'm pretty much married to the Japanese cast.
But here are a few key points:
1. The dub is 10 times better than the 4kids dub.
2. I love the fact Funi's dubbing OP/ED again
3. The dub isn't rubbing me the wrong way the Naruto dub did when it started on CN, and THESE DAYS I worship the Naruto dub and, outside of two actors, it's pretty much on par with the Japanese version. IMHO.
Okay now here's the deal.
Luffy- Sounds like Ash from the original Pokemon dub. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. The acting is good but Mayumi Tanaka's take on the voice is just so quirky and unique. And this isn't a jab on the "perfection" of the Japanese version. Maile Flannigan made Naruto her own, Sean Schemmel made Goku his own, Justin Cook made Yusuke Uremeshi his own, Richard Casino made Kenshin his own, HELL, even DAN GREEN made Yugi/Yami Yugi/Atem HIS OWN. I just don't get that vibe from Luffy but as the Jaya arc continues we'll really see if Colleen Clinkenbeard is up to task.
Nami-Perfect. Spot on. I don't care if it is the Kaname Chidori voice. It works.
Ussopp-Sonny Strait uses his natural voice, which actually sounds like a GOOD version of the 4kids actor. A lot of people said it sounds more like his Krillen voice but I disagree. It's pretty decent.
Zoro-I prefer Marc Diraison. Sorry, but if you take away the corny dialogue he was the PERFECT voice for Zoro. Right now it sounds like Chris Sabat is trying to hard and the voice is too deep. But hey, I didn't like his "frog in my throat" Kuwabara at first and now I couldn't imagine anyone else doing the voice. So I'm giving it time.
Sanji- Honestly, too young. There was a "coolness" to Japanese voice that is no longer there in the English version. Eric Vale is OK, he's just not winning me over. But he is better than David Moo who pretty much raped the voice (and I actually LIKE his Xelloss from Slayers).
Chopper-I slightly prefer Lisa Ortiz's take on the voice. But that's only because I'm a Lisa Ortiz fanboy (she MADE Lina Inverse). Brina's performance is actually very good but at times sounds a bit whiny and less cute and Ortiz captured the cuter side better. But at least we have no "man voice" coming out of big Chopper.
Robin- Would be fine if she didn't make everything sound so...sexual. There's a certain breathyness to here voice that needs to be toned down a bit. More mysterious and less...I can't say it...
Still, as far as crediting the dub on it's own merit's it's okay. Definately better than the 4kids dub and for a first episode it is above average.
Just to let you guys know I was underwelmed by Naruto, YYH, and Yu-gi-oh's dub when I first seen them and these days I prefer them even to the Japanese version (well, Yu-gi-oh is stretching matters ). The jist is this is just my first impression opinion and I think the dub will improve overtime as the actors get more accustomed to their characters. I just hope I'm not disappointed in this like I am with the Bleach dub. (Sorry, it's just not as "fun" as the Japanese version).

I didn't touch what he said about the gals.
Of course I HATE Nami so much (She's so evil to the guys) & Robin...I could maybe like Robin, but that 4Kids voice was so horrid, I learned to ignore her. I need to go back & watch the tape I made (even bought new tapes since the ones I've been re-using are getting so bad. I only tape the stuff on CN until I buy the dvds so the One Piece will be fairly swiflty recycled) I was paying more attention to the guys & the script.
My first reaction on Zoro was "Speed Grapher". The first line reminded me of the voice Sabat used for the photographer. Doens't matter if he had only one voice that he used for everything. He's an actor--it's HOW he uses what he has. Just because an actor ca do 100 voices doesn't make him better than the actor that can only do one voice well enough to convey any emotion he needs to convey.

....I meant that he applied his opinions about the one piece dub. I can see some statements he made where you had to explain a few things, but...
It's okay if he likes 4Kids better. It's not a big deal.
He was just giving his opinion, and you kinda shot him down like yours was totally justified. That's how I saw it, I guess...
And as for the 10pm comment...Saturday? Oh please. Not all parents would really care for that rule anyway. >.>; Some parents let their kids stay up as long as they want...but anyway, Toonami is still Toonami, and if it's a target set to a certain audience, young ones will watch.
