I don't see the reason for all this talk in the comments. Yes it is stupid when female characters are censored for the west, when it's something so minor. But this guy here doesn't has anything wrong, I mean, the place is based on Hawaii, it's hot over there, so he hangs out shirtless...

That's kind of the point; there's been several recent instances of censorship over minor things.

I don't think anyone here or in general have any issues with him being topless. Some just like to point out the double standard that when a female character shows off skin it's easily labelled as oversexualized, but it's totally ok when it's a male.

So much fun to see the trend that started with Gen III's Professor Birch continue.

I have to say, though: lots of salt in this thread. Apparently, people shouldn't complain about T&A if it's women because that stuff is just how it works. Hey, if it's good for the gander, it's good for the goose.

Not so much fun when the sexualized gaze is on you, is it?

Also: the arguments over "censorship" in gaming never cease to be hysterical. Shine on, you crazy, crazy diamonds.

I didn't even know that people were going that crazy over the new professor, but then again I'm not following anyone obsessing over these things on my social media platforms. Guess I'm not too surprised though. Razz

I'm not bothered about that, actually, I'm indifferent. Because I look at that as a normal thing. Same thing applies to the female characters.

Wow, the first professor to be married, right?

Nah, there have been others that were married.
iirc, Prof. Elm was married and had a kid.

Prof Brich was also married I believe, with Ruby/Sapphire being his son/daughter (depending on which character you choose).

Hell, even Oak had Green has his grandson, so he was in some sort of relationship x)

Can't say nothing about the others, I don't even remember if the professor of the 4th generation is male or female, and I haven't played the others.

Regardless, people see half naked males in television/anime all the time or even outside in the real world. There's no serious need to cry out double standard when this has been a norm in society before all of us were born.

I actually think it's cool that he's named after an actual Hawaiian tree. Anyways isn't Kotaku like the Fox News of gaming news?

I am not familiar with Fox News, but Kotaku is very sensationalist and dishonest with it's reporting. In this case it seems like it's trying to manufacture a narrative of this character being massively popular when he is not. If reporting fan art is considered news they should have reported on Lillie since she has way more fan art than Kukui. More than likely it was only posted so the author had an excuse to post porn as part of their job. Although my major problem is Kotaku regularly talks about sexualization being bad and gamers are scum for liking attractive female characters, and yet here is an article about oogling porn. Extreme hypocrisy...

I'm failing to see how a guy being shirtless, which is widely accepted by society as not sexual, is "objectifying" him.

Also, is everyone in this thread forgetting that Skyla was a thing and literally no one complained about her booty shorts and crop top? She is wearing clothes that are more likely to be regarded as innaprpriate and sexual. Also no one gave a crap about Elesa's outfit in Black 2. So no, they would not pull the same crap because there is a difference between sexualization and objectification.

Objectification and being accepted by society are not mutually exclusive. If the girlish screams when a hot guy takes off his shirt in a movie, or all the covers to romance novels is any indication, I would say a guy showing off his abs is definitely seen as alluring.

Women finding a guy attractive isn't objectification. There is more to it than just that. Unless this guy is treated as prop, which he won't be because he's the Professor so he'll get a personality/motive/talking points/agency and etc., he is not being objectified by the game.

The Pocket Monsters games have been censored plenty of times in America in the past. Nintendo was the original game censorship company after all. Skirts were made longer, bare arms were covered up, gay and transgender characters removed, sexual relationships with Pokemon were removed, character were race lifted. Gen 5 was no different in being censored in the west. Gay Hiker, Aloe, and Trap Kindergarten Teacher comes to mind as being the more popular ones.

A professor can look like anything. A professor can also have any hobbies they want (which goes a long way towards them potentially looking like any sort of person).

I take it you're not a Pokemon fan, given the shear amount of incest smut of Kudari and Nobori there is and how it dominates doujinshi conventions. Not that the whole 'drop in the ocean' argument is a strong one to begin with.

Who were they again? I'm guessing Ingo and Emmet?

The Subway Masters in Black and White. They are pretty much the most popular characters in the Pokemon 'adult community'.
