The rules for the forum have changed, as of 12/10/2003.

1) Discussion should be related to anime, anime news, Anime News Network, the forum topic, or in some way relevant to this website. Excessively off-topic ("OT") posts will be locked or deleted.

2) This forum is an English-language forum. All users are expected to have a working knowledge of proper English. We are not an IM chatroom; we expect proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. If English is your Second Language, please say so in your first post.

3) Threads and topics should carry some measure of intelligence to them. Consider if what you are writing is relevant or important to others. If it does not contribute to the discussion, do not post it.

4) Swearing is frowned upon. If you disagree with a poster, disagree respectfully, or do not disagree at all. Also, do not use "gay" to mean "stupid".

5) Signatures are disabled. Do not make "fake" signatures.

6) Do not excessively quote. If you are responding to a single idea, quote only that relevant part.

7) Abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-charged, dangerous or illegal material will be removed from the forum by moderators. Depending on the severity of the incident, your IP address may be retained or reported to law enforcement, as necessary.

8) Moderators have the right to lock, delete or modify any post at any time for any reason. If a thread is locked, that means the subject may NOT be brought up again. If you feel a thread should be locked, Private Message an administrator (Cookie, Tempest).

9) No Commerce! ANN's forums are not to be used to sell, buy or transfer goods or services. Users may not post their own commercial endeavours or link to commercial websites unless specifically requested by another poster. Personal websites may be linked as necessary, provided that it is requested or relevant to the discussion. Users who have been hired to advertise for specific items will be banned.

10) Users may not link to bootlegs, fansubs, scanilations, active fan-translating groups, peer-to-peer networks, timed scripts, or websites that house these groups or products.

11) While the administrators and moderators of this forum will attempt to remove or edit any generally objectionable material as quickly as possible, it is impossible to review every message. Therefore you acknowledge that all posts made to these forums express the views and opinions of the author, not Anime News Network. Additionally, statements by Anime News Network staff on this forum are personal opinions and may not reflect the views of Anime News Network as a whole.

Concluding Statements:
If you think something is unfair, private message Cookie or Tempest and explain the situation. We will consider the complaint as fairly as we are capable of doing.

We expect a working knowledge of English in the ANN forums. If English is your Second Language, please say so in your first post.

[EDIT - In case anyone wants to discuss the new rules, I've temporarily unlocked this thread. -C]

These rules really don't differ all that much from the old ones, just use common sence people. I know tempest and/or cookie have brought this up before but If you think what you say might offend someone. Don't say it!

It is better to not speak, and be thought an idiot, then to speak and remove all doubt (or something like that)

the reason for the rule-change (and there were some slight differences) was to clarify a few things.

specifically, no posting or requesting bootleg links.. and the ability to speak english.

Since I don't have a copy of the old rules, I can't remember [u]exactly[u/] what they said. If not already done, it may be helpful to mark any changes by bold, asterisk, or something. I agree that the rules are based almost entirely on common sense/courtesy, but it may be nice direct people to the specific changes.

Actually, I'd already posted the old rules on "Teh Rules" thread, as a way of preserving them:

Smart move. They do differ from the old rules slightly.

I'm glad you made a point about not using the word "gay" to mean stupid or bad. That's an annoying usage but it's sweeping the country. (If I were homosexual, I'd find this language trend scarey. Since I'm not, it's merely offensive.) (^_*)

Will there be any rules for repetitive tolling in the near future? I'm sure you guys are getting tired of locking certain threads started by certain people...

I think it's called banning them. I think it was a couple months ago we had a couple (one in particular stands out in my mind) of people who posted thread after thread of pure spam. Moreover, the topic (if it were worthy of one) was the exact same. Never saw them since.

Sakechan posted this in another thread... but it's quite useful, so I've taken the liberty of reposting it here:

Use spoiler tags any time you discuss specifics of a show, REGARDLESS of age. Things that should use spoilers include spoiler[deaths of main characters, sidekicks and villians, unexpected plot twists (good or bad)] and especially spoiler[when discussing shows or episodes that have not broadcast or been released in the US].

This is being posted here because the problem doesn't really exist in any other forum.

Once I'm sure everyone has read this I'll delete this topic and move the post into the topic about the rules.

Please, leave the moderating to the moderators. See that little "report this post" icon? If you suspect there is a problem with a post or topic, please click on the icon and let us decide.

Please do not insult the poster or his post, and please do not make a post saying that you think the thread will be locked, you're just adding to the problem if you do that.
