I quite enjoyed this series, and it was one of my favorites of 2014. The animation, characters, and action were all great, and while it wasn't super deep, it had emotional depth where it needed it. I found episode 10 (or was it 9? The one with the "dramatic turn" and certain revelations about Emira) to be so emotionally powerful that it was a couple weeks before i could steel myself to finish it.

I do get a little annoyed at series like this that mix up western mythologies indiscriminately; it feels less like a creative choice, and more like lazy appropriation. Devil is a Part-Timer, another series I really like, did this too; it's not a deal-breaker for me, but i just have to throw my hands up at it. What'r'you gonna do, amiright? Razz

I was surprised to see that the LE came with a 320-page art book; how was that? Is it worth paying the extra money?

Easily one of my favorite shows that aired in 2014, up there with Space Dandy and the second half of Kill la Kill. I already own it, actually. Once I get back from vacation I'll be firing up my bluray player to take this series for another spin.

I think it's supposed to be 32 pages, not 320.

Very good show but I have to disagree that the show never let up, once they set foot in the city it just felt like it ran out of steam for 2-3 episode where nothing much happened and could have easily been done in just one episode.

I loved the series. But the best part about the show was it's visuals. They were absolutely gorgeous in itself. I'm glad that it was a short series which makes it easier to pick up. I can't wait to see what they will do for S2. But I DO plan to own this.

I really loved the show the first time I saw it but not so much the second time. The best part of the series wasn't the visuals as much as the surprises that came with them after each turn. And once you know them.. check your spoilers, maybe?... you can't help getting a little impatient for them to show up.

"Is this where the spoiler[zombie dragon] shows up? We already had the crew."

Also, I'm not really sure what Jeanne D'arc does here beyond being inexplicably the Jeanne D'arc in a fantasy setting. I know she... well, I guess she has something of a fan base in Japan but there has to be more to it than "Hey, it's her." here. Because that's some Fate/Stay Night level of name dropping otherwise.

Ah, fan fiction fanservice. Wait, really?

It looks like the only negative for the series that you gave because it is only 12 episodes ( which truly is to short for this show) has been heard and the second season is set to be 24 episodes so it wont as fast paced as the first..i just hope the rest of it has the same potential as the first season did.

Also i like that you recommended this show to air in Toonami..even i can see that happening one day and i hope it will...this would make a great gateway anime to a new generation of fans, especially those who like the fantasy genre.

Yeah, Jeanne D'Arc shows up A LOT in anime and manga. A teenage girl who was a soldier and inspirational leader? They're all over it Smile She actually shows up as a villain in Drifters, a heroes-out-of-time series by the guy who did Hellsing.

This is the series that I'm most excited for the sequel to. This first season was a blast with a sly wit that reminds me of what I love about The Witcher games and novels. Returning to this world and exploring some new stories is going to be a whole lot of fun after the wonderful ride that the first season gave.

Mappa was immediately placed on my radar after this and the only disappointment that their team has put out has been the second series of Garo, which was a real disappointment as the first five minutes were so good on that one...

and its good series too. unfortunately that is where i disagree with the reviewer. while its a great series, it probably wouldnt do well on adult swim and i highly doubt they will give another fantasy based series another chance.

and there is one reason for that. Moribito, which was an excellent fantasy based series as well, but unfortunately did very bad on AS during its release since fans only wanted high action based series like a code geass or shonen jump type series like naruto and bleach (when they had their runs). its that sense is the reason why space dandy and kill la kill did so well on AS cause they run the same formula that toonami fans want.

the only fantasy based series i can really see CN give another chance AND do well on AS would be the remake of Berserk which is coming this year or if possible in the near future , a remake of record of lodoos war.

Except that instead of both being "fantasy" series, Rage of Bahamut and Moribito are different from each other in every conceivable way. Visually, conceptually, tonally...They're practically on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Yeah, Moribito had the disadvantages of being horribly boring and mostly pointless.
This series is far, far more accessible to normal people who just want a fantasy action show.

While I'll agree with the second comment, I certainly won't agree with the first. Moribito didn't work on AS (and probably never should have been picked for AS) because it's a much more deliberate and thoughtful show, and that kind of fare rarely does well on AS/Toonami (GITS: SAC, of course, being the major exception).

From what little I've seen of Kabaneri, that one might also be a good fit for Toonami.

i would have picked that too, but considering how poorly moribito was received, i concluded that it probably wouldnt work on AS. same for rage of bahamut. its as i said the only fantasy based series that would probably work for AS would be the new Berserk series.

I remember seeing Moribito on AS and yeah it didn't work, but not because it was fantasy based. Its just not a good show to watch weekly and since it builds on its previous episodes even missing one episode hurts the experience. It works better watching it in chunks. I was a little bored and wasn't really able to keep up with it on AS, but once I saw it later in its entirety it became one of my favorite fantasy series. Rage of Bahamut on the other hand is primarily an action show and unlike Moribito is little concerned with world-building and more interested in having fun thru its characters. Its got humor, likeable characters and at 12 episodes is a lot easier to digest. I think it would probably do fine on Toonami. This season's Kabaneri might also work as it is a big action spectacle.

As far as the show itself I would say the world-building could have been deeper, as could the characters and their development, and yea the ending felt a little rushed, but its one of those shows that you can look past some of its weaknesses if you are having fun with it and I think the show does succeed in the fun department. My only hesitation about picking it up is I don't know if it will work for me on a second or third viewing.
