I really didn't know where to post this, so I'm trying for the manga section because it's an adaption of a manga, and sadly Hana Kimi has never been turned into an anime, and well, I hope comparisons of live action drama's vs manga are allowed.
I've always been a fan of Hana Kimi, and when they announced a live action drama I was excited. The only exposure to live action adaptions of manga/anime I've encountered are of the Sailor Moon and Nana kind, and I don't think that counts as a J-drama tv, so Hana Kimi is a new experience for me that I'm discovering I'm loving.
I was a bit "what the hell is this" with the first two episodes or so, but over time the characters of the show have grown on me, and now I'm loving it and happily waiting for the next episode every week.
Favorite character in the show so far: Nakatsu
My love for Nakatsu's character has grown so much since episode one, and he's easily stealing the show. The actor has got Nakatsu DOWN, and I love how they're showing Nakatsu's problems with the whole Mizuki = a guy so that means I = gay?! problem. Hands down the most faithful character in the manga to live action aspect of the show.
Following him, I'm loving most all the guys (cept Oscar, Akira *Wtf is with he being a she?!* and Sano... Sano bores me). Mizuki's actress is cute, but there just something missing from her that manga Mizuki had in her personality. And Umeda, though not as crazy as his manga counterpart still = luv.
The opening with the zoom out of all the guys cracks me up every time.
Anyone else watching the amusing manga adaption?

Ugh.. the live action is HORRIBLE- no if it was horrible it would be watchable.
Mizuki is a whiny, emo parrot repeating the same lines of dialogue
Sano is an emo snot with ZERO charm
Kayashima is a freak, and not a good one either
Kujo was cut out
Himejima is so over done he's slimy
Sekima and Noe are almost cut out
Umeda is a droopy barfing crybaby, where's my gorgeous doctor who wields his foot like a weapon!?
And I won't even start on their changing Akiha from a GORGEOUS bisexual, HUGELY talented man into a simpering idiotic little girl.
Japanese humor and I don't mix, I think, most of the humor is so painful to watch I turn it to fast forward..
Nakatsu is the one character that is being done well. He is reasonably true to the manga. He has grown a lot and his coming to grips with his feeling for Mizuki was well written and well acted.
I'm praying for a faithful anime adaption. *Anyway I'm not sure you WANTED to know all this but I told ya anyway I've needed a place to vent for WEEKS! *

I'm still kind of out on how I feel on the hana kimi drama. While I did like the manga, I have only read the first 4 volumes of it. I am however a big fan of Japanese drama series and theres alot of actors I know and like in this drama.
Over all though I think I like it, I actually like Japanese humor, and I really do love the silliness of the series. I do think the hana kimi drama is more of a "desert drama" meaning something thats less deep and meaningful and is more about the wacky humor, but it does do okay in the drama department just not as well as other shows.
One of the things i like that they did with the drama was with mizuki's character. She seemed like less of a fangirl, and had a better reason for moving to japan to see Sano than the original manga . I like how the drama drew Mizuki more into why Sano stoped high jumping. In the original manga it never really made alot of sense to me why that other female character ( sorry, I forgot her name ><; ) was the one involved in Sano's accent when she didn't seem like a significant character in the first place.( though I wonder if she played a role in the manga later on... i guess i don't know sense i've only read the 4 volumes)
I also like watching how Mizuki developed feelings for Sano over time, instead of her immediate crush she had in the manga.
Another thing I liked better in the drama was that Sano didn't find out until a little later that Mizuki was a girl. I still don't know how immediately found out in the manga. They never seemed to explain how he did in what I've read, and thats always frustrated me. ( but then again I wonder if they cover it later on in the manga..?) It seems weird Sano was the only one to immediately suspect "he" was a "she" when everyone else just assumed she was a girly looking guy for the most part.
I will say the thing thats been annoying me about the drama is the fact they turned it into a "ikemen" thing where all the boys are "hot" looking. It dosen't even make alot of sense, how it was explained to Mizuki in the beginning that it was a school that only accepts beautiful looking guys, when shouldn't she have known this already?? If she was accepted in to this school, shouldn't she have gone though some kind of screening to see how good looking she was..? Not to mention it makes the show seem a little shallow and I can't see a character like Sano caring about going to a school where the whole emphasis is on looking pretty.
I also got a little annoyed at the fact that they seem to want to insert some kind of wacky contest between the three dorms in every episode... it gets a little old.
That being said I do like the drama, it does have it's faults but it still manages to entertain me again and again.
And as said before I think one of the great points of the drama is Nakatsu's character. I really love how Ikuta Toma ( his actor) played him. Even if the rest of the drama was total crap I'd just watch it to see him act like his silly self..

Sano carried Mizuki, when she was knocked out playing soccer, to Umeada's office. Because of the way he carried her he felt her boobs under her jacket.
The whole premise of a girl there for two years is pretty farfetched to begin with!

I've not watched any of the J-drama, but seeing how I borrowed this series from a friend recently...

Actually that's not right, at least not according to the english translation. Mizuki was even more careless then normal, not only forgetting to lock the bathroom door and she didn't close the curtain while taking a shower. Sano walks in on her, seeing everything in the first couple chapters of the manga. He decides to play along with it.
The part you're talking about happens later, Sano picks Mizuki up so that Nakatsu, or anyone else, won't have a chance to figure things out. In fact the part your remembering is him commenting that she's flat chested, not figuring out Mizuki's a girl.

I don't remember the other girl's name either, but she isn't an important character. From what I could tell she was there solely for Mizuki to find out why Sano wasn't high jumping anymore, physically and mentally, so the manga could move on to Mizuki helping Sano decide to jump again. It was that girl, because she was the one Sano saved before being hit by a car (at least I think that was what the accident was.), and I believe she was his team's student manager (or whatever they're called) when he was jumping before.
edit: typos

I couldn't really get into the manga. The manga seemed like it was trying to create an actual story while the drama knew it was just going to be silly and entertaining and it didn't try to be more. The characters to me were over the top but they were done in very cute or very funny ways that in the end, I just prefer the drama more.

Toshirodragon, you're right I was confusing scenes, sorry about that.
The scene I was thinking of occurs later during the dorm competition with the chicken fight, which is well after Sano figures it out.
I think I was flipping the order in which things happened because it made more sense to me that way ^^; Also, why would Sano, knowing Mizuki is a girl, even open the bathroom door without at least knocking while she was taking a shower. Maybe he wasn't entirely convinced he was right, or too used to communal bathing areas so he didn't think about it. Or perhaps I'm projecting my own habits/preferences onto the manga, I don't know. But walking in on her the way he did to save his watch and having her convienently not using the shower curtain seemed at bit too contrived. I think how odd it seemed is another reason that it stands out more in my mind as being how Sano knows then the way it actually happens

the manga is much much better.. i just love the manga.
the drama is kinda ridiculous (specially people in dorm 3!! the head was stupid )
but the manga was the best thing ever!! it is funny, interesting...
spoiler:
in the manga mizuki was the main character, the person who sano relied on completely. he told all his problems and secrets tp mizuki and i think that's how they got closer.. but in the drama, mizuki didn't have much of an appearance in this section. sano most talked to sekime and nakatsu. nakatsu had a more leading part in the drama. but in the manga, nobody told him anything!
but the decision of returning to high jumping in the drama was more real for me.. in the manga i dont know how or when.. sano suddenly decided to return to high jumping.
but even now, i keep looking at the manga and not the drama.. the manga was superb
