Hmm well to be fair a lot of my preferred anime growing up had the same voice actors, so hearing some new voices in the role may be nice.

Aaron seems like a great fit. I hope Funimation uses its best voice talent for the Escaflowne dub.

This seems rather stupid. What are they going to do if the campaign does not reach $220,000? Funimation should have released the whole cast today.

I'm not surprised to be honest. Chances are even if FUNimation wanted to, they wouldn't be able to get all the original voice actors back together again. And besides, I don't recall FUNimation outsourcing any of their recent acquisitions to Canada as of late. Though I could be mistaken.

Internal dub confirmed then I guess.
Insanely curious why they had to run the Kickstarter in the first place if they were simply going to do it internally.
I'm not going to make any judgement on it until I hear the final product but this is pretty sad news, mainly because its the second time Funi's screwed over a Canadian dub but I guess this is at least better than Shana where they only dubbed Season 2+3 and the movie, leaving only Season 1 with the Ocean dub which lead to some pretty fierce whiplash as some performances were VASTLY different in that one.
Dismuke's an interesting choice though, as none of his previous roles have really been anything like Van.

Interesting. That could work. I don't know if I'd put him in the same league as Kirby Morrow, but I think he'll do well enough.

Regarding the argument of whether to reprise the Canadian voice cast, wasn't one of the antagonistic characters in the original dub voiced by Andrew Francis before puberty kicked in?

Quote: | Sonny Strait will direct the English dub |
Lupin III dubs: so-so
Maria the Virgin Witch dub: not good
Mikagura School Suite dub: sub-par
Prison School dub: terrible
Rage of Bahamut Genesis dub (so far): nothing special
Chances of a good re-dub: Extremely slim...
Even if it somehow ends up being very poor (with Strait he has yet to prove he can direct a good dub; average is considered "the best" he's currently capable of atm) Funimation probably doesn't care. They didn't have to spend a single buck.

Yep. Hard to believe Lasse from Gundam 00 voiced Dilandau. Then again, he did Azrael from SEED and Azrael was probably even more nuts than Dilandau.

I have to go into this with 0 expectations. Can't remember the last time I enjoyed one of their dubs thoroughly

Wasn't the Shana movie a retelling of the first season? I wonder if that's the reason they didn't bother redubbing season 1 then?

I'm the one (Adam) who sent in this news (for some reason my old SN and account died, but I've been following anime and been on this site for about 15 years now) as I got the email right away, and oh man was I not too happy. I got one of the higher tiers, and to hear that Somny Strait is doing the dub is disappointing. I listen to both dubs and subs, and his directing tends to be extremely weak when compared to other directors, including new directors Funimation has been using. I was hoping for Mike McFarland, or someone else (anyone else). I would have liked to hear Ocean again since I have the collectors art box on Dvd and it's one of my favorite anime.
Also, didn't the Kickstarter reveal that Funimation was working closely with Sunrise on the dub?

This is going off a bit of a tangent , but ya wanna know something I noticed a while ago?
Back in the early-mid 2000s, Ocean Studios did quite a number of dubs for anime, some of them anime fans adore while others not as much. And yet one thing I haven't seen any anime fan acknowledge about an Ocean dub is how often they have kids or teens cast in a dub. I think they've done that more often than any other region that has dubbed anime. Kid actors are even cast for roles in shows that surprise me when I think about it. For instance, in Shakugan no Shana, there are these two twincest characters that appear for a couple of episodes and are seen making out from time-to-time. The male of the twins was voiced by Aidan Drummond, as in Brian Drummond's son! FREAKY!!

I expected that Funimation would end up using their new in-house cast instead of attempting to reunite the old one from Canada, for reasons understandable. However, I'm sure the new cast will sound impressive.

Japanese reps working closely on English dubs honestly doesn't mean much. Plenty of dubs in Texas where they have the freedom to cast whoever they want can at times be better than California dubs who have a separate casting director + ADR Director
It's really only with potential flagship franchises e.g. Naruto and One Piece where getting Japanese approval of the leads actually matters.
And plenty of dubs that were approved by Japanese producers aren't always amazing. IIRC Bang Zoom's dub of 5 Centimeters per Second wasn't as well received as ADV's dub.
Interesting that Aaron Dismuke is the lead. If that's the situation Funimation may as well let him direct the dub instead...
- Aaron despite having less experience is already a better ADR Director than Sonny Strait (yes Strait is that weak and has set a low bar but Aaron has actually done well so far)
- Funimation's doesn't seem to care if ADR Directors cast and direct themselves (tons of broadcast dubs are guilty of this) so why pretend that it's important that these two positions must be by different people for this dub?
