As I figured, it's not an actual crossover, but something to promote both games with in-game stuff. They used BlackRose's recent art from Project X Zone I see.

Still waiting for that one "virtual reality MMO" keyword project CC2 announced into existence last spring. I know it was in concept phase at the time, so it'll be anywhere from a few months to a year from now before we hear anymore, but in the meantime, IF IT IS .HACK (it could always be original, too), these kinds of promotions and the New World game are probably the best thing to interest new casual fans (for more promising sales) and keep the franchise relevant during the wait.
The fact that they haven't completely abandoned their non-Naruto child means a lot to me, even if the mobile games (especially New World, since I at least played Guilty Dragon regularly) weren't that great and have been meaningless, storywise. It means they're not embarrassed by it and probably want it to come back at some point if they can help it.
BTW, this may or may not be news to people here, but SAO's original cell-phone-written first novel volume (before it was licensed and became an official product a few years later) came out while .hack//SIGN and .hack//IMOQ were in production. Personally, I still prefer .hack (and especially .hack//SIGN), but it's not a conceptual clone of it, even though it's cool that Kajiura Yuki did both soundtracks. They just came out of the same era that things like Welcome to the N.H.K. and Serial Experiments Lain came out, which shows.

Must have struck a nerve. However, I think that "opinion" is pretty universal. Just saying.

The SAO fans and the .hack fans will be at each other's throats for months to come.

How do you get stating that opinion vs opinion, which is what it is, as striking a nerve. I completely agree with that statement since I don't agree that one is Over vs Under Rated.
There are tons of people that rant on about how .hack was better which I disagree with completely since imo .hack and SAO were 2 completely different styles of show that just happen to take place in an MMO world. .hack got boring af but when it was good it was great. SAO had a disjointed story but had good action in it. Everytime I see people say .hack was better I just imagine old people in rocking chairs shaking their canes at younger people. "My anime was better then your anime" lol
