Butterflies are symbols of death and rebirth, due to their metamorphosis.

Oh, and don't get your hopes up too much with "Red Garden." It starts out utterly awesome, and then bombs in the second half. It's not so much bad as disappointing, because it could have been so much better.

I certainly hope vashfanatic is wrong about Red Garden, because it's starting out with so much potential.

That's two strongly positive reviews now on the title from ANN alone, which hopefully will get people to check it out when it comes out on Tuesday.

It's not that Vash is saying it's a bad show, just that the second half isn't as compelling as the first half. Which it isn't. Still worth a watch though.

Does this column normally update on a monday? I was so weirded out seeing it- maybe because it shows up later in the day or something? hm.

Three of my next purchases are mentioned here- theres a special on the School Rumble box-so I was going to pick it up!

Also- the Beck Starter box is on sale at FYE so I was going to get that too. Red Garden just sounds cool- I was going to grab it.

So...$60 spent before I even get it. Damn.
(Beck Box- $25, School Rumble- $24 ($14 w/ my bb discounts), and Red Garden $18)

I'm glad for the reviews, Thanks!

Wow, actually managed to catch the column before it was a week or two old (love when it is actually featured,) and back-to-back weeks no less ... dare we get our hopes up of a return to such a schedule with the summer convention season winding down & Bamboo having a modicum of time to work through her backlog?

Anyway, I will have to check out the official review to see how that one glowed about Red Garden, but it just didn't click with me while catching episode 1 on ANOD. Not sure if it was just the mood/mindset I was in, or the consistent sense of "the ParaKiss artist did a female version of Gantz" that couldn't get me to care in the least for it. Guess I can give episode 2 a shot and see how it goes from there rather than just cutting it off immediately.

Anyways, great column as always.

Your golden anime theme list is perfect, except for one crucial missing song:

"Futsuu no Nichiyoubi ni" from Hana Yori Dango. Let's all sing together! "Stepping Out..."

Yes, there's almost nothing else creepier than that...unless those children start wielding knives with giant smiles on their faces.

And I'm glad to see more love for Beck; something this site is kinda lacking. As a huge fan of rock music it's definitely my favorite. On that note I just want to add that I got some really cool Beck stuff at NDK from Greg Ayres; that truly made my weekend (well, that and seeing Megadeth).

Chiisana TRY TRY TRY
IT'S MY DAY

Actually when it comes to Escaflowne my favorite song has to be Kaze no Fuku Hi. When Maaya Sakamoto sang that as an encore at her AX concert a few years ago I just about melted.

I'm looking forward to Red Garden. I tried to watch Hakkended a few times over the years and could never quite get into it. It's just too poorly written, too convoluted, and the animation too rough. It's nice to have classics, but I'm afraid that's not one of them.

Perhaps it's because I never yearned to sit at the "cool kids' table" that I simply cannot relate to nor like Koyuki? I mean, at the very end of the series I felt he was tolerable, but through the majority of it, I just wanted to hit him. Granted, he's no Keiichi/Hideki/Keitaro/Shinji, and he's probably someone I'd be friends with, but watching him on the screen isn't particularly fun for me. I guess I was just always too satisfied with where I was to relate with such a character.

That said, I like a lot of the rest of the characters, and like the flow of the plot and everything (minus some really random "intrigue" thrown in towards the end that didn't make sense to me with the story they were telling.) It's a good series, I just wish I could have liked Koyuki enough to get more out of it like other people do.

As for anime playlists, I agree with Cloe about adding the Hana Yori Dango theme. I personally would also put in "Yuzurenai Negai" and "Asu no Yuuki" from Magic Knight Rayearth as well. That's probably because even in 2007, I still believe "Yuzurenai Negai" is the best anime theme song ever. Kodocha's "Ultra Relax" is also a prerequisite for any good, fun playlist in my opinion.

Question! When was the last perishable item? I can't even recall... Have you gone softer on your reviews, stopped reviewing crap in general, or is there really nothing currently coming out that is crap?

There was a perishable item in the previous Shelf Life. Now granted, it wasn't because the show was awful, but rather marketing decisions, but still, there you go.

Oh, didn't even notice that was in there =)

Aside from that one, *goes looking*

Huh there was also one only 4 articles ago.

Well, I guess it's a little harder to notice with the newer set-up, I'm still not quite used to it.

EDIT: Whoah @ This weeks Shelf Obsessed. That's insane. It took me two days to put together my only model kit...
