The issue with FF was that it was a feud between studio and director. Since neither the studio is the same or the director, this might have a chance at being good.
However I don't know if having it be R Rated would really add anything to the series. It was perfectly fine bring a TV 14 anime. An R rating might be more of a detriment.

I really wish Shane Black(Iron Man 3) was still attached to this project. He was the man fighting for the movie to remain faithful to the source material. I have fears that this movie is going to stray a lot from the source material.

I don't think it being R-rated would do it any more good. It sounds lame in my opinion. I loved the manga though.

I wouldn`t say this film is white washed because it`s an American adaption, however does that mean other races can fill in others roles "Yes possibly as long as it works."
The problem here is that "Death Note" is really good and being attached to a more condensed style director and a writer with the possibility of it being really bad, might not be the best choice for this film.
I honestly think this series is too fantasy like and too anime, to be adapted to the screen like "Dragon Ball Z."

I actually beg to differ on that last point. Unlike DBZ which would be understandably hard to adapt and market to the average American viewer, Death Note is a psychological crime thriller. People over here eat that stuff up. If you market it right, it'll work. The movie itself just has to be good.

I wonder if this is like a way to prevent complaints about the movie causing kids to emulate "Death Notes" in school.
By making the movie R-rated you give yourself an easy defense of "the movie wasn't meant for kids so don't blame us, blame the parents who let their kids see it".
There's been occasional stories in the media about "Death Notes" and kids being suspended or expelled because of it after all...
I don't know whether it'll make the movie better or worse though...

I have a different opinion then almost everyone about this movie. Adam Wingard is the perfect director. If you go watch his movies The Guest and You're Next you will know the tone of his movies will fit Death Note very well. I think a R rating will be great for the movie. They won't have to hold back with the character designs or the death and killing. The series is very dark and morbid so a R rating makes sense for the movie. I think its going to be better than most people think.

You cant compare Death Note with DBZ at all. Death Note is easier to adapt to a movie then DBZ. Death Note takes place in a timespan of like a year or something? WHile you dont know even where to begin with DBZ. Start with Dragon Ball? SHow Goku growing up as a person and a fighter? Or Simply start off from DBZ and show goku growing up in flashbacks? But then you got the same problem with the amount of villians and the like 20-30 year timespan it covers. Or you can just create something like the garbage DB movie of a few years ago. Death Note is in that regard WAY easier to do, but only if it does the source material justice. ANd 1 movie of 2 to 3 hours doesnt cut it.

Directly: Superstitious studios are panickedly trying to delve the reason why Deadpool made so much (gee, a cult-fan comic hero in February, with a year's fan-targeted web hype and nothing else in theaters except Kung Fu Panda 3? Nah, can't think of a reason...), and are now falling all over themselves to say "Our movie has an R-RATING" in the hopes that we will love them too.
Even though it brings up the old joke on movie boards, every time we hear fans who rant "Wait, this cool movie's only going to be PG-13? That stinks!"
[Edit]: removed disparaging comment directed at fans. Errinundra.
(Aw, c'mon, if you're going to cut the punchline, why keep the setup?)
And since I haven't read the manga, um, what exactly happens that IS R-rated, that didn't happen in the TV-14 anime?
Most of the deaths are nice, clean heart-attacks, and most of the more strategic deaths, like the FBI agent's, Light makes sure are plausibly unsuspicious and bloodless.
I'm thinking the producers may have had the idea of "Hey, this story is sorta like Final Destination, ain't it?"

I just don't see how the content warrants an R-rating, at least if they're adapting the manga's tone. There's lots of death (surprise, surprise), but it's mostly offscreen. The stuff they do show isn't graphic; you'd find it in plenty of PG-13 or TV-14 stuff. In any case, the main conflict is between Light and L, and later Light and Near/Mello. They spend a lot of time on the psychological aspects, and that's where the tension is rooted.
Adam Wingard is an interesting choice. Having seen The Guest and You're Next, I can say he leans heavily toward fun, graphic violence. He uses pretty common set-ups and adds his distinctive flair. Adapting Death Note with campier elements without destroying the drama could work well; the anime hammed it up at points. I'm just uncertain if his particular taste will be a good fit simply because he loves his cartoony hyperviolence, and that's not exactly where DN sits.

Just add a bunch of F-Bombs and the movie will get an R Rating of that regardless of what other content is in it, it worked for the various Steve Jobs biographical movies (I still have no idea how the first Tremors movies got away with that many and only got a PG-13).

TV-14 is the TV euphemism for 'kind of PG-13, kind of R'. Back when I actually watched TV some PG-13 movies were labeled with TV-14, and some R movies were also labeled TV-14. (The R movies labeled as TV-14 usually had a bigger alphabet list, SVLD and all those pretty ones in between.)
And if the some of violence/sexual themes got too prevalent, than it upgraded to TV-MA. In TV language, there is no R. (At least back in my day)
