Yeah, that's UBW pretty much. I also felt like it had a "show not tell" problem where the characters loved to expound on how Shirow's personal philosophy was "hypocritical" and "flawed," but it never showed much of how exactly anything he ever did actually turned out badly for him. There were some vague flash forwards, but it never remotely had the emotional impact of other shows that tried a similar sort of challenge to the character's fundamental beliefs that they're helping the greater good, like in Trigun or even Fate/Zero.
Also the repeated use of the word "hypocrite" in the translation bugged me. How is it hypocritical to want to follow the example of the adults that raised you? That's simply how humans behave. Maybe I was missing something, or maybe it was more shoddy writing or translations. |

You can't forget Lancer! Poor guy has his fight with Archer be way too short (though still cool), and his big moment is punching Shinji. I'm still sour the anime teased a Lancer vs Caster battle, and then it happened entirely off-screen. I feel like UBW's biggest problem as a whole was the number of episodes. Taking into account that the first season had three double-length ones, it all adds up to like 29 episodes when it could've been done in 26, easily. Soundtrack-wise, I didn't particularly like any season's except for a few tracks, but I did like the new remixes of fan-favorites from the VN. |

The only real problem I had with this was the pacing of the spoiler[Shirou vs. Archer] fight. It felt like they had about 1.5-2 episodes worth of content that they stretched into 3. Even then, I still really liked UBW, partially because I like Archer's character.

I would've liked a review made by another person, not by the guy who already made clear that he hates the show.
You know, a different opinion. |

Nick hadn't reviewed the second season yet, and I don't think any of the reviewing team were particularly thrilled about the show. Plus, he had reviewed the first season's release. |

Hmm, I actually preferred the second half to the first.

I've actually held off on the 2nd half for quite some time now. Just have always heard that it's a real disappointment that doesn't live up much to the setup of the first half which quite frankly is the majority of what that was so if that's truly the case than the whole thing has just kind of been a waste of my time. Frankly having seen the Fate route and Zero as well I've just never really liked how any Fate anime series I've seen has come together in the end or really hasn't all that much which is disappointing since the first Type/Moon property I saw Kara no Kyokai very much did. I guess there's just something cursed about the Fate storyline for me in particular.

Yeah, I like Shirou too.
Obviously the staff isn't thrilled for the show when they started with Zero, show that already developed the hero of justice theme and its consecuences in the Fateverse for newcomers. Even like that, I still believe people don't get what it truly means to live and sacrifice yourself for others like Shirou/Archer wants/wanted. The second cour deviated greatly from the VN, making the first a more faithful adaptation and product. I blame the changes on the 2nd cour to Nasu's lack of self-confidence, specially what he did for "answer". Well, the director also needed to make a better job, there's a reason why Fate/stay night is so popular and why people liked the VN. But again, a second opinion would've been nice. |

This is the second opinion. Here is the first. What you want isn't a second opinion, but one that matches your own. Which is the exact opposite of wanting a second opinion. P.S. Saying "Anyone who came into the show through Fate/Zero's opinion is going to be like so" and "The opinions of writers on this site are predisposed against x" only further cement you wanting only a certain type of opinions, which was reached in the exact same way you reached yours. Makes one wonder why you come to read such reviews, since we already covered you don't want second opinions. Except, I do know why. So when you do find such a "second opinion", of someone who is a "secondary" but who "got it", mostly by self-abasing their taste and critical faculties, you could point them out to all the actual second opinions. |

I enjoyed the visual novel, I was so hyped for this series, and even mostly enjoyed the first cour despite having some issues with it (I watched the first episode like four times the first week it came out).
I can't even remember the last time I was left feeling so disappointed with an anime as I was with this second cour. There were some parts I liked for sure, like the climax of Ilya's arc, but on the whole I had largely the same issues with it as Nick did. I felt like some of the overall production quality took a step back in season 2, and then there was so much talking talking talking and beating the same narrative points to death, until I just wanted to shout "Get on with it!" like the scene from the other Holy Grail. Anyway, I will not be buying this series, and I doubt that I'll ever feel like watching it again either. I might occasionally go back and just re-watch some of the best individual episodes, though. |

Yeah I'll never understand this seeming need by fans of popular VN's like Clannad or Fate to have others exactly parrot back to them their specific perceived quality and interpretation of what are often some pretty straightaway storylines when you cut through the padding and sometimes convoluted dialogue that they often like to employ. Whatever happened to forming your own opinion on the things you watch. If other people have had similar problems to the ones I've had with some of these things obviously there's something to it and it's not just "missing the point". Frankly I think Nick and I got the point in the first half pretty well, it's just hat we didn't came to the exact same conclusion of utter brilliance and satisfaction that the stories most ardent fans did and for whatever reason that upsets them. @WingKing: From what I've come to understand since this aired (and this is purely going by secondhand insinuations since I haven't seen it yet so take this with a grain of salt) apparently ufoTABLEs production schedule just utterly collapsed leading to the massive drop off in fight quality and padding out of certain dialogue and monologue scenes to allow them to just barely keep pace week to week. By the time it was done the studio was just dead and had to do God Eater which turned into the production calamity of the decade so far with a 2 week delay to even get the first episode out and now a bi-weekly schedule of release. ufoTABLE since went on to take like 6 months off to try to rebuild their schedule and team and get the last 4 episodes of God Eater worked on and now has to try to get a Tales of Zestiria anime out this year (probably Fall) and get some cutscenes for Berseria animated as well as work on a movie for Fate (all of which is ostensibly dated for 2016) which is still more workload than they've ever been faced with so I could see it all happening again with one of the projects (probably Zestiria X) ending up sacrificed. I marathoned fate zero and ubw all last week as ubw box set 2 arrived. Having no experience with the series at all I most say both animes were absolutely amazing. The story, the characters, the visuals, the fights, the dub, etc... everything was suburb. As for ubw box set 2, while I loved the 1st set, the 2nd set blew me away and It was my favorite between the 2. Couldn't be more happy with my purchase

This blogger started with UBW anime and made a legit review, imho. http://rereadsandreviews.com/2015/07/05/ubw-review/ Anyway, I think that Nick's review is legit and well-argued as well. |

Not actually. I never said that, I never demanded a review praising the series, just a review by another person. We already know what he thinks of the series, but apparently, a so-so dub release is enough to read the very same thing again worded differently. And why are you so mad bro, calm down. I'm trying to be polite here and explain myself, but you're putting words in my mouth and assuming stuff I never wrote. pls. Tales of zesteria is actually coming this spring, those idiots at Namco don't seem to care about ufotable and wants the anime so they can promote their games. |
