Can't be as bizarre as that vocaloid appearance on Letterman.

I don't care it's a gimmick, it's a good gimmick. I could care less for the Jpop scene, but I like BM.

I was really surprised by how good their debut album is. It's still a good listen now, over a year after I first heard it. I'm not a fan of the typical metal vocals so having a metal instrumental with a J-pop vocal was a suprisingly enjoyable combination for me. They're pretty talented and seem to be embraced by most metal acts (even if there are a lot of bitter metal fans who refuse to accept them ). They're playing an arena over here in the UK soon so they are somewhat popular in the west.

Oh this should be interesting. I think Tao was on the show recently. But man I would love to see them here in NYC, but I doubt I could take a metal crowd.

Yeah, that was crazy bizarre. Enough that it got 6 full threads on /a/ (some of them stickied) of anons watching a stream of Letterman when they otherwise wouldn't so that they could shitpost about it.
Most of it was bitching about how slow the show went before Miku's appearance, and complaining about how unfunny they felt Letterman was and how many ads American TV shows (remember, a bunch of the posters were international or hadn't watched commercial TV in a while, so they were unused to the amount of commercial breaks for the show).
I think Letterman's interview of Willie Nelson got some positive comments though. And the fact that Letterman said after the song that "It was like being on Willie Nelson's bus" got turned into a meme for a short while after that, along with tag lines from some of the New York area ads that kept being replayed on the stream during the commercial breaks (including a political one for the election for governor of New York that was coming up slamming the Republican candidate for saying that soup would be good for seniors who couldn't afford to get their dentures replaced if he cut dental benefits for people on medicaid, and featured the a repeated "Soup is good!" line that was replayed a ton of times during that show).
The performance itself was very strange though. I can't say i didn't enjoy it, nor did the anons watching and posting in that thread, but it was really poorly aired on TV, and clearly the audience and Letterman himself had no idea what they were getting into, based off of their reaction afterwards and during. The sound mixing was way off and though I know why they chose the song they did (Sharing Your World, the official song of the MikuExpo North America tour and supposedly in English,. but you really need to strain your ears to hear what Miku is singing for it to be considered intelligible), it was pretty poorly done. Though really, it was either that or another performance of World is Mine that would've been played either way, since that was probably Miku's most known song at that time, IIRC.
Still, shitposting with anons in those threads was fun. Got to brag about getting to go to Miku's New York show the next week (it was what she was on Letterman to promote after all), and spending my Jeopardy winnings on a ticket, plus some bantz with the anons and a namefriend I recognized from a quest thread in /tg/ in those threads talking about my experience on Jeopardy once I brought it up. I was supposed to spend the next day exploring the show floor of New York Comic Con on my day off (I was going to be working there for the next three days after), but I was too tired after a night of shitposting and checking for responses the next day when I woke up that I didn't have much time to spend at the con after I got to the Javits Center that afternoon...
Said as much to friends I saw after the Miku concert at Hammerstein a week later, and they pretty much agreed. Also people at the Miku art Expo on the Lower East Side pretty much agreed as well. Though the concert more than made up for the thing on Letterman, and I got to meet Hiroyuki Ito (the creator of Vocaloid software and the CEO of Crypton Future Technologies) at the expo on its last day as it was closing down. He even signed a bit of confetti I snagged from the concert (fired from the stage at the climax of Miku singing Melt, that was a good time).
Anyway, I am so going to catch this episode of Colbert, since he's now my late night go to show (since I don't have cable and have to catch the Daily Show online instead, and Fallon can be funny, especially some of his sketches and bits, but I like Colbert's delivery more than his, especially honed after the Colbert Show).
Babymetal is great, and I'm debating whether to spring for their show in Times Square at the Playstation Theater at the beginning of May or the new 2016 MikuExpo concert at the end of the month at Hammerstein instead. Probably can't afford both, though maybe with a tax return and Chinese New Year money I might, I dunno.
Babymetal tickets are like $25 cheaper at base, not accounting all the fees that Ticketmaster will tack on to the MikuExpo tickets, and the MikuExpo concert is being held the same day of my cousin's wedding, and my family would kill me if I missed that, and I don't want to disappoint the family, plus I really want to go to that wedding as well to support her... Really want to go to that concert too though, and I like Miku more than Babymetal... Decisions, decisions.
Maybe Colbert will bring Miku back right before the MikuExpo concert in New York for promotion like I guess Crypton did with Letterman's people two years ago? Dunno about that idea because of how it went down last time, but Colbert has a different staff than Letterman, even if the building is the same (albeit renovated) and he likely inherited some people from that previous show there... He's having Babymetal there and last year had the orchestra playing and promoting Zelda Symphony of the Goddesses in New York there as well. Guess we'll just have to wait and see, but a man can hope, I guess...

I do. Sometimes I ramble on for way too long on tangents and inconsequential details if I start posting when tired... It's something I've been trying to fix, but sometimes there's just things you want to say despite knowing you might go on for too long if you do, and likely would forget to do so if I wait until I'm less tired to say them...
Sorry if it was really long winded, but a I guess a tl;dr really would've helped avoid a wall of text.

Hmm interesting seeing them appear on American TV. I'm not a huge fan of idol groups but they have a few songs I like. They also did a collaboration with DragonForce which is my favorite metal band. I do find that non-Operatic female vocals for metal is rare and I quite like the bands that do have that. I still like them better than I like the vast majority of American pop though.

Ooh I'm down for that, I agree that it will definitely be better than the Miku performance. I think every vocaloid fan cringed at that.

Baby metal is something very intelligent from a commercial standpoint, by exploring a vast potential niche.
I am a big metal head and I don't care about J Pop much although there are some enjoyable stuff there. Baby metal is a weird type that sometimes doesn't work for me (their more electronic sounding songs are pretty bad) while some of their songs are cool, the more "metalish" songs.
By the way, there is a great diversity in vocals in metal. We have harsher vocals and softer vocals, including some female vocals like those of Epica or Nighwish that are pretty soft and very unlike what people associate with metal vocals.

As someone who listens to all types of metal from Iron Maiden and Judas Priest to Moonspell and Rotting Christ, I have to say that Babymetal is a weirdly enjoyable experience. For real. In japanese metal though, my preferences go to X Japan, Loudness and exist-trace.
A bit out of topic, but has anyone here heard of Moonspell?

I like your posts, GhostStalkerSA. They stand out and they usually have some interesting tidbits and digressions (they are a bit long, though). I remember those "Soup for seniors" political ads. Didn't know it became a meme on /a/.
I'm surprised that Babymetal took off and that people say their music is good. I'll admit I wrote them off as a gimmick and never gave their music a chance. Guess I'll check 'em out on Colbert.

I'll be turning in to watch I just hope that it won't take too long to get to Babymetal well at least Colbert is a little bit more funnier than Letterman.
