Despite the obviously growing market for tattoos in the US, it is still very regional for a variety of reasons. For example, visiting a beach last summer on the east side of Michigan about 45 minutes north of Detroit, only about 5% of the people there did not have a visible tattoo. On the west side of the state about an hour north of Grand Rapids, on a beach with the same number of people, only about 5% had visible tattoos. Cultural, religious, political, and socio-economic factors all play a part.

As seemingly the last person in the West who doesn't love tattoos (or at least the last person in New York), I'm glad for this. Just like how anime guys still can have long, soft, pretty hair while everyone here has half or full buzz cuts, even most girls.

. . . though the HOMRA guys in K pull it off. Because they're small, and in the right places (two of them have them on the front of the shoulder, at least one has it on the back of his shoulder).

Most estimates I've seen suggest that around 40% of Americans aged 18-40 have had at least one tattoo. I don't think you can still call that "very regional" based on two experiences.

Some neat cultural notes in today's Answerman, thanks for that.

It's also probably because that's just one more thing to draw/animate so why add it for no reason. Sure, if the manga has a character(s) with a tattoo(s), or a light novel makes a special note of it or it's in one of the illustrations, then the animators' hands are tied, but outside of that it would probably just be a hassle for them unless they actually have a story or character where it's a significant element.

There is a guy in Speed Grapher who has a power that specializes in using his tattoos to fight people. So of course, the guy is covered in tattoos. I think there should be more powers like that because it is pretty cool.

I'm not fond of tattoos. If I see a girl with one, even if she has the best face or body in the world, a piece of ink, at least if it's the permanent kind, is a huge turn off for me and I hope it doesn't become a huge thing in Japan to the point where they start giving every anime character a tattoos.

Ever the land of contradictions, Japan: both the place where some of the best tattoo artists in the world work & where you can still get fired for having one.

Tattoos are fine but not too many or a full mural, moderation is the key because lots of them or full murals aren't attractive.

Yes, it seems that tattooing generally just isn't Japan's forte. Plus, a character having a tattoo means more work and increased difficulty for the animators.

I do recall spending a bit of time at a place where people having at least one visible tattoo of some sort were a common sight.

I find tattoos unsightly and honestly don't see the point in having them. Lets hope they stay out of anime.

Swastika Guy: "No, it's not what you think. I'm a Hindu."

Answerman: "And the eagle?"

Swastika Guy: "...Garuda?"

Huh now that I think about it...the only anime I have seen where a character does have a tattoo are older ones or ones in some sort of organization, such as Train Heartnet from Black Cat or Dino from Reborn! And both weren't even Japanese either, so that makes alot of sense too.

I can kinda see how animating it will be annoying though, so I always appreciate it when an anime does include it. Most of the time, I find tattoos annoying as well, but in Dino's case, I think his are actually pretty cool..

There's quite a bit of male characters with tattoos when it comes to yaoi manga. That's pretty much a requirement for any character who claims to be yakuza.

I'm all for more tattoos in anime. A harem series where every girl has their own magical tramp stamp tattoo would be entertaining.

Never been a tattoo guy. But if it were the norm in anime(especially not being plot related), I wouldn't care.

Personally I can do without 'em. Not opposed to them or anything, but visually I don't like them that much, and would never get one myself. Not too interesting to me.

And perhaps part of the reason is that I could never get a tattoo. I hate having things on my skin, so I guarantee that even if I found it cool to have, I would freak out and carve it out with a knife eventually. Back in elementary school if I got marker on my hands I would spend half of lunch trying to get it off. A tattoo being more permanent than that...ehhhhhhhh
