I was curious as to whether or not Disney would make their first R rated movie.

If the Terminator movies can no longer hack it at the box office when they're PG-13, then there's no chance in hell GITS will be R.

Why would you think it will be R-rated? I don't think so.

Johansson will pull it off. I just hope it's better than Lucy, because that movie was just downright terrible.

Since the Disney/DreamWorks partnership has come to an end and that DreamWorks is now partnering up with Universal, I am surprised that it's Paramount deciding to take over the distribution of this film instead of Universal.
As for Ghost in the Shell, since the cast and crew are all set up, this thing is definitely not going to get cancelled unlike the multiple failed attempts with that live action Akira movie.

Unless you mean their first R-rated movie by themselves, they have had various R-rated movies by their sub-companies.

The switch from Disney was probably for the better. I could not imagine them releasing this and not watering down the source material for a PG-13.

No matter who makes it, of course it's going to end up being PG-13.

They've just come to the realisation that GiTS is not meant for kids and therefore can't sell merch to kids with it that's why. Also Paramount aren't likely to feel forced to making it 12+ in ratings. Also if and when it tanks at the boxoffice it won't be Disney that gets it in the groin for it. Shroud move on Disney's part.

I'm surprised that Netflix haven't jumped at the opportunity of a live-action adaptation of a popular anime yet. GitS would have been the perfect place to start, given the success of Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
Maybe something more... vicious and surreal. Claymore?

I've always thought that Claymore could make an awesone live action film(s), if done right. I say that because in order to convince me Clare can use the quicksword or Ophelia her rippling sword or Miria's phantom speed, the special effects budget would need to be off the charts. Still, a competent director and actor (maybe Emily Blunt as Clare?) and it could be a dang good movie.

Mohawk: No, they'd still make it 12+. Again, the last Terminator was a wash for them. But obviously, someone at Paramount also noticed the Fuchikoma/Tachikoma 'cameo' in that movie, and figured they can finally pull it off, too.

I would like to see Disney have less of a growing monopoly on media, so this to me is all good news.

Last thing I expected was Batou to be played by a Greyjoy. I'm really scared for this movie, I always thought it was too obscure to be this exposed, and I've known the series since very little. First mistake though was Johansson, I can't forgive them for that.
