Since it's a mystery series I would take an educated guess and say it's something you find out later. I've seen episodes 1-12 (volumes 1-3) and I don't remember them mentioning exactly what it is yet.

v1cious:

From what I can gather, which is by no means reliable:

spoiler[Robin stole the book from D'Eon at the end in a flash and escaped with Maximilien's former companions; because he became very disillusioned with the corruption of the monarchy -- the circumstances of the betrayal and death of the two companions especially hit him hard -- and Maximilien essentially took him in at his weakest moment. The scene in the last episode had D'Eon too surprised to react quickly and Robin proclaiming that it was no longer the "Psalm of the Kings" but the "Psalm of the Revolution." He then, with the aid of the magic book-thing Psalm of the Kings, and assuming the name of the now-dead Maximilien, became the "historical" revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre. I think D'Eon witnessed his execution also, though it is not shown in the anime; they shown the execution of the monarchs instead.

The words are France - Parole - and Éternelle in order. France is well, France. Parole - I think - translates as promise. My French sucks so don't quote me on that. And Éternelle is eternal. So it's an "Eternal Promise [to?] France," probably referring to D'Eon's lifelong loyalty and the dream of a new better France and whatnot. Something along the lines of "France Forever!"]

So it's a spin on how the Revolution came to be except with lots and lots of occultish conspiracy thing.

Yes, I've seen 4 volumes of the series (16 episodes) and it still hasn't been explained yet. Hopefully all will be revealed in the final 8 episodes.

Anyway, I love Chevalier. Easily my favorite series that that's currently being released that I hadn't already seen via fansubs. It's well animated, it's got gorgeous art and a story chock full of delicious intrigue to boot. Great, great anime.

What I'd like to know is why spoiler[the blond Robespierre seemed to have died half way through the series (with blood coming out of his mouth and nose and all) and then came back to life.]Yeah...the first time I heard about it I watched the whole of Chevalier raw apart from episodes 1 to 6. So while I got the gist of the main story but I didn't grasp the details at all, me being a complete Japanese language idiot and all. But seriously, I just had to keep on going...the series is THAT great!

[Eagerly anticipating the release of the rest of the English DVDs.]

I picked up and watched volume 4 last night, had some pretty interesting developments. I'd seen the first five episodes fansubed but everything else after that is new to me. I'd also agree that it's easily my favorite of what I'm watching new for the first time on DVD.

It receives one of my highest recommendations. Consistently, it has earned good review here on ANN, and, quite frankly, I haven't heard a single negative comment about the series (excusing some minor flaws in the art/animation every so often). The story is highly elaborate and the character (and setting) designs are absolutely gorgeous. I would tell you to pick this one up immediately, but normally I suggest people "rent" things in case it just so happens to not be their kind of show.
