Lucky Japan, getting Otaku cafes of all types. Truly a paradise fr Otaku. I'd just like it if there was a stable cafe within driving distance over here.

That place looks boring, the Otaku cafes for all genders look far livelier than this. It would be perfect for a napping cafe though.

Wouldn't work in the UK, their Equality Act enacted five years ago prohibits establishments from discriminating based on gender. There's already been some cases around, mainly involving gentlemen's clubs.
In the US many states have similar provisions in their Civil Rights prohibiting discrimination in places of public accommodation, for things like sex, race etc. Not sure what the situation is on the federal level though?
For Japan there are prior examples, at least a few times it has been mentioned here on ANN of concerts that were gender-specific...

Based on a recent trip to Japan, this is very common in both directions. There are train cars designated only for women. There are multi-level stores with certain floors for either men or women only. I saw men only floors in adult shops and female only floors in arcades. The latter includes those popular picture machines.

Actually that is not quite true, there are women only charity events, there are events at universities that do not allow white males (this one is truly bizarre) and there are religious institutions and events that keep men and women seperate. Underneath the surface these happen fairly often such as at Parish council level, they are just not reported on.
I think this venture would work in the UK. Sure, it would get an article in the Daily Mail critising it but no-one really cares.

It's always disconcerting to hear about gender segregation in Japan, it seems to suggest that there's either friction between the genders, or a strong belief in "gender roles/identities", neither of which sounds good to me.

I hate to break it to you mate, but Otaku are shunned by the general population in Japan.

IIRC, Train Molestation is a thing. It's the reason for the Women-Only Carriages octopodpie mentioned

Also pod hotels, they are still for men only.

Given the state of the anime industry, thank god. I know I wouldn't want to go to a cafe populated by the kinds of people that pray to fictional preteen girls in public. Maybe to us Americans this is seen as unnecessary, but seriously, this is a blessing and a haven for a lot of people.
Of course, it would be preferable for nerds to just not be that terrible in the first place, and then this cafe wouldn't be needed. But until that happens, this is the alternative...

Yeah totally we just had a thread about sexual assault like a week ago or something. I don't know how bad otaku culture is in Japan, but outside of conventions I've always tended to stay way from nerd culture community stuff here in the US because let's face it; there are a small minority of guys that haven't developed the social skills to socialize comfortably with the opposite sex and that can come out in a variety of awkward or hurtful situations for both parties. I know again, small minority as I have plenty of nerdy guy friends but all it takes is one or two creeps to ruin someone's time. I remember a news post awhile back where older otaku guys were being rude at a Precure event or took over Precure message boards or something.
I don't think the answer is keeping men & women separate all the time because I've noticed people get along better with the opposite sex when they've been around mixed gender groups from an early age. But it's still nice to have female only spaces to just chill and focus on your hobby without worrying too much about what to wear or makeup etc. Some girls like to just relax in girl only spaces, just as men have their 'man-caves' and like to just talk to other men sometimes. Nothing wrong with that. If someone never socializes with the opposite sex that's their own damn fault not the fault of some cafe or gender segregated events. Remember that places like these are the exception and not the norm... and Japan hosts a variety of events for men and women to meet each other (gotta get that birth rate up! lel)

That's really interesting. I wonder why? I could rationalize the examples I gave, i.e. men might feel more self-conscious picking out their porn of choice around women and the picture arcade floor has women changing and hair styling stations.
But one-person hotel rooms? Is it because they don't have proper walls or something and they don't want people leering at one another while trying to sleep?

No offense but I could see why this would be really appealing to female otaku, if for no other reason then security
