In a sense it's hard to really touch Kantai Collection. There's just such a vast selection of Fleet Girls to choose from compared to series with only a handful of characters.

I think the thing with KanColle is that it features a main character (Admiral) that could be imagined as male. Its main competitor, Touhou, has a cast comprised entirely of females and no male mains that a player can imagine themselves as. So KanColle bolsters its popularity through canon Het while Touhou is restricted to non-canon Het and mainly Yuri, which is arguably less populous. Also, Kancolle got an official anime which helped it dramatically both in Comiket 88 and in this one against Touhou. |

2hu hasn't been neck and neck in some time now, like at least 3 Comikets. |

Kancolle continues its dominance of doujins, even as its garage kit dominance has cooled off. I suspect AoT doujins will increase after the long awaited second season, so next one or the one after that. I don't dare think what Splatoon doujins look like, though there is plenty of market for such things. Not sure I could look someone who bought one in the eyes though. As to Love Live, it's been a while and Sunshine hasn't been adapted into an anime, not to mention there's only so much you can do with 9 members, compared to IM@S. Weak turnout for IM@S considering CG aired recently. Glad female oriented doujins are ascendant. More equal representation can only be good for the fandom, even in its more sexual realms.

This is pretty clear seeing that Kantai Collection has become the new flame that is giving Touhou (Project) a run for its money.

When does KanColle and Touhou combine forces to create an unholy supermonster property that eules over Comiket for years to come?

It's difficult to compete with KanColle when it comes to the Comiket.
Even the official Comiket manual featured it this time. |

I've always wondered why Touhou has never gotten an official anime adaptation with how popular it is. I'm starting to wonder the same about TouRabu, seeing how it exploded this year. It's like they don't want to print money

^Thanks for the info. Has he stated any specific reason about why he doesn't want it to be an anime? Or is that just a case of "eccentric creator demands"?
I really hope we do get a TouRabu anime one day. I've never played the game but I really like the character designs and the focus on swords is definitely right up my alley |

I'm really happy that B3 is doing so well.
I am a little miffed that Kancolle is more popular than Touhou. IMO, the character designs suck, and the game practically plays itself. Touhou has a lot more substance. |

Ship Girls/ no plot
Sword Boys/ no plot Singing Girls/ no plot Sport Boys/ no plot Fight scenes/ marginal plot More fight scenes/ marginal plot And Osomatsu. And the fact that someone felt the need to designate male vs female, says, among other things, what this is really about. yeah, let's just not. |

There's light plot to Kancolle. It doesn't have an end point, and I don't think it will. I think anyone looking for Byzantine plot is really looking in the wrong places. Oh but last event Graf Zepplin came into the game, though my favorite pickup from the recent event was Kashima. Those event maps were themed after some battles off the Solomons. The main maps of world 1-6 don't hammer you over the head with a plot, but its there for you to piece together. One map is about clearing a part of the nearby sea for transport operations, the next map is to slam through and escort a supply convoy and the following is a dramatic showdown with the main enemy fleet that was baited into the engagement. Its a plot for every user to interact with at their own pace.
Also there's some sorta worship that old style narrative is the only measure of quality. Doujin based off a game need ask only one thing, is the game good? Yeah! The game's pretty nice. Free to play no less. The characters are voiced splendidly, there's alway been some new updates and pretty seasonal events. The reason why Kancolle overtook Touhou is very simple, we're getting new source material from the creators. Mogami is best waifu, btw. |

Yeah, doujins tend to be led by PLOT heavy shows than plot heavy shows. Kancolle leads because there just so many girls to pick from, that to do even a fraction of them, you would make a ton of doujins. I imagine it's also popular as well, which is another factor in doujins production. I believe there wasn't many Osomatsu doujins if any. It's mentioned because one person mentioned in the article predicted there would be many, based on its popularity on pixiv. While not perfect, there does seem to be a good correlation between pixiv posts and doujins. And there is a plausible mechanism for one to lead to the other, as both are forms of fan art, and popularity in one form would not be too different from popularity in the other, aside from some exceptions, such as Osomatsu, though for understandable reasons. I haven't looked at the Osomatsu tag on pixiv, but I imagine it's more comedic than sexual. And as doujins are heavily sexual compared to fan art (which a not insignificant portion is sexual), the representation of Osomatsu in doujins is much smaller than the calculated amount based on pixiv |
