Is this because the movie is actually that good or is the fan-base for this show really big?

Both. GuP has always been about showing the tanks in action, and their historical background. Otherwise, it's practically Love Live! when you factor in the cute girls in an underdog-let's-save-our-school story.

I find GuP to be superior to LL, when you make that comparison. Its a bit less fluffy when it comes to the serious matters, and also the fanservice is...not there. There's a bonus swimsuit mini-episode for season 1. But yeah, there's a bit of plot and there is more of a struggle.

It's by and large the same producers so it's not terribly surprising.

What i loved in the Anime:

Creation of Trust and friendship

The Tank fights, with his tactics and easter Eggs (the "German School" attacked from the Woods like in Ardennen)

The Music Theme for every "country". Russia got me by surprise. Also a bit Fanservice for Russia fans do not hurt

Respect to the Enemy's, even if this little US "Radio Girl" use dirt mouth Talk, she was in Rage and fear

"This is an Tournament, not War!" (US Leader)

Okay. See this here more then an Tournament, where no one Die. Sure there is a low risk of Engine fire. But mostly the Ammo is save...

Also, an Hetzer can up weight an Maus!! and even hold the extra weight of their Light tank, and still chassis intact.. Okay (Anime Magic here)

i could get on with positive things. But i want to end here now... i already wrote many words on my favorite page to this
